Exercises?
« on: March 10, 2016, 10:33:29 pm »
Anyone have sets of exercises they do for practicing buildups, rhythms, leads, chord progs, etc? What are they?

I like to take 3-5 samples (anything) and do five channels worth of "add fx + flatten, repeat" on each of them. I turn them into risers, 100% reverb things, weird distorted sounds, anything.

Similarly I'll take a bunch of random hihats, snares, toms, and misc percussion elements and arrange short loops out of them.

I like to start my drop with a solid bench press warm up...oh wait....exercises...

You can really do just about any thing to create a build up. and depending on your musical context, you could do many effects of your choosing just to get a cool sound.

I would suggest you bounce some audio to a stem and then manipulate the wave form while doing effect automation.

basically you're creating a sound transition, so make sound effects that aren't necessarily musical in nature.

I'll take a bassline and gradually ascend upscale at whatever tempo/key/scale fits the idea, then I'll build a basic chord progression around it with a basic saw wave pad or piano to keep things simple.

After that I'll repeat the bass line (or modify slightly) invert the chords/add sevenths/suspensions or other embellishments as the melody moves along trying to create tension

Once I'm satisfied with my melody I may add rhythmic elements (synths or drums... Or both) to compliment and add some cool rising or sweeping FX.
