Tech House track, having problems with mixing.
« on: March 07, 2016, 05:14:25 pm »
Hi guys!
So I am working on this track for our project we have with couple other producers. I really want it to be as good as my current skills let me, but I cannot get it sound right mixing-wise. I have panned, sidechained, EQued, etc... but mainly the kick, snare and base still seem odd. What do you think? Also what do you think about the track as a whole, any tips? Thank you very much, I really appreciate!  :)

I definitely like what you have here. However, I do see what you're saying. The track is definitely pretty quiet. It could use some more beef. I think the kick is definitely a bit too weak. The biggest piece of advice I give people regarding any drum sample but a kick specifically is as follows:

Choose a sample that works. Don't worry about Eqing your kick. If you have to EQ a kick, it probably is the wrong sample. I never eq or compress my kick at all. It is always raw. I also never layer kicks. I used to, but I think that one good sample works better than 3 OK ones.

Are you using some sort of limiting/maximization on your master chain? It seems like levels are good, it just needs to be brought up in volume.

Really dig the vibe you have here man. It is a very cool track that simply needs some polishing.

Thanks!

About the master, I use Aggresive Dance Master (ableton preset) so I might beef it up thru that.. In previous version I made the kick and the bassline much more "bassy"  but my friends (non producers) that listen to the track complained about that "bumb bumb sound" that was too disturbing for them. So I really need to find the way how to put the drums in the right place volume-wise and frequency-wise.. but cannot seem to do that.  :-\

Update:

So I changed the kick and snare sample, beef it up thru Dance master... sounds beter (update: Not sure about that after several listenings :/, maybe I should leave the old kick/snare and just put the overall volume up thru utility), still not perfect tho
