Dealing With Dynamics Between Song Sections
« on: March 06, 2016, 01:36:23 am »
Hey guys. Right now in the track I'm working on the verse is shamefully louder than the chorus. I want to lower the balance of the instruments in the verse so that they are balanced with the chorus but if I do that then I'm also going to be lowering the balance of some instruments in the intro, (Intro and verse share a few sounds) which will result in the balance of the intro being messed up.

How do I adjust the volume between the verse and chorus without completing screwing up the balance of my intro? If that was unclear then let me rephrase the question. How do I deal with unwanted dynamics between song sections? Better yet... how can I prevent this from happening in the future?

Try a compressor on the Master bus, it can help.

If you verse is louder than chorus, your layering might be wrong.
You can use volume automation if you want to keep the sound as it is.
I usually add some volume automation on my sub bass channel.
No, try again.

volume automation, not compression.

may require weird groupings to retain and change the ratios.

Group sent to group. keep in mind that you're summing and subtracting the signal prior to the last group.

And for automating volume, you may want to slap a gain plugin as the last insert on your layer, and automate that instead of faders. That way you avoid some headaches when mixing down.

Best advice someone can give you.

Compression can't do that much without altering the sound of the loud parts. It's volume automation you are looking for.
