How do you use pre & post fader settings?
« on: March 03, 2016, 08:41:30 pm »
I'm kinda curious how you guys deal with the post & pre fader options.

I've been playing around them recently and there's some nice stuff I came across.

For example when you send your reverbs to certain instruments suchs as vocals or pads, do you use post or pre?

Also, what else do you add after the reverb send, besides EQ to cut out the lows?

I find it's easier to work with the post-fader option, as I use my DAW faders to mix, and I would like that to affect how much signal gets sent to the reverb as well.

It depends on the reverb and whether or not the track is relatively center in the stereo field, but sometimes I add stereo widening to push them away from the middle a bit. Not too far though, as it may begin to sound unnatural.

Also, there are cases where sidechaining the reverb to the original signal can cause a cool effect, but I don't use it too often.

They both effect the buss signal differently

This gives a pretty good example, and is universal in it's application and understanding.

I usually mix my effects with pre and post settings depending on the vibe and context i want with that particular effect.

For the case of needing something audible more from reverb than from the dry signal I mixed some stuff with pre-fader option and it was a nightmare. You essentially had to do a whole new mix for that reverb return. Any mix change had to be done twice.

So I returned back to post-fader method. I gain the reverb signal by 5 or 10 dB, so I can drown stuff in it if needed. Also when having loooooooooong pads, I tend to use an insert reverb and not use return. That way tales are audible right away after I freeze the channel.
