Guilty pleasures
« on: February 29, 2016, 07:05:47 pm »
...anything music related you know you shouldn't listen to or do?

Me for example, I shamefuly like some Max Martin-ish pop. ...and it's nowadays variants. I'm kinda boyband resistant, which is pretty guilty for a guy. :D

...or while production itself, i like to try big looong epic pads with every track. Eventhough it doesn't fit it sometimes.

Yours? :)

EDIT: And what makes pleasures guilty anyway? :)

meh, I'm over being concerned about feeling "guilty" about listening to certain types of music.

Honestly? I like it all. I can jam w/ some boy bands, some metal, some classical, some singer-songwriter, some blues, some dub, some house.

Wouldn't it be nice to live in a world where we could listen to the Backstreet Boys guilt free?  :-P

I guess it would. ;D
...but hey, lets turn the discussion this way, I like it.

What makes something guilty? For example this "Love Yourself" by Biebz. It's a cool song. Ed Sheeran wrote it. That's why. ...but why is it transcendently shameful when Bieber sings it? Does your history define how your music is precieved by people? Does it overpower the actual quality of the song?

We are pack animals, we want to belong to a group. It just so happens that the group you want to belong to doesn't appreciate Bieber :( For most of the millions of people who listen to that song, it's not a guilty pleasure at all.

That being said... I used a preset and some unprocessed samples for a remix competition just a while ago. And I kinda liked it.

Oh, same here. Also on a remix contest. Guilty. :)

Did you know that Max Martin wrote and produced Britney Spears's "Hit Me Baby, One More Time"? And almost all of the Backstreet Boy's hits? Besides the countless other top 10 international hits?

Yeah. Been somewhat a fan of him since the 90s. He's an absolute monster.

As for my 'guilty pleasure', I like listening to ABBA a ton. Simply because the song writing is amazing and the pop production is top notch. Every single part of the song serves a purpose. And all of the instruments used are acoustic instruments (as opposed to 'fake' sampled instruments), which I love.

I also listen to a lot of female pop singers like Madonna, etc. Madonna's Ray Of Light is surprisingly ahead of it's time.

I'm a techno and metal lover, not interested in commercial music and my guilty pleasures are...

- Lady Gaga (there, I said it, I like her music)
- Cheesy 80's synthwave (like this:https://bartgraft.bandcamp.com/album/nineteen-eighty-five)

Now that I think about it, Lady Gaga is synth pop too. Can I say I have only 1 guilty pleasure?  ;)

Justin Bieber. I get so much hate for listening to Justin Bieber from friends or family. I've been called a faggot because of it lol. I just don't really understand. He's a good singer and plays a variety of instruments.

Well ... have to admit, his last album is actually pretty solid. (Though Ed Sheeran and Skrillex fandom might be the reason too, lol.) I'd even buy it if he'd wear a bit more clothes on that artwork photo. :D

My guilty pleasures:
Lady Gaga (I said in in the other thread already) - Fame/Fame Monster are absolute masterpieces, this is how should catchy pop music sound like (and yea, others make fun of me for listening to her :-\ )
Althought I hate almost everything about Taylor Swift, some of her singles from latest album are just irresistible - especially Shake it off
Also I'm definitely not Bieber's fan, I have to say that his collabs with Skrillex are good
Another guilty pleasures are songs around 2005 where these extremely cheesy records that sampled old classics hitted the charts - Eric Prydz's Call on me, Uniting Nations - Out of Touch etc. Kylie Minogue

How I see guilty pleasure songs: Catchy/sweet pop songs that everybody loves, but nobody wants to admit it

I like Taylor Swift, Ellie Goulding, and Bieber´s new stuff.  I know Max Martin is behind Taylor´s stuff, and JB´s new album is ready bought, but they are good songs anyway. Yeah, and Carly Rae Jepsen.
I rarely listen to the kind of music I make, with the exception of my own tracks.
