EQ attached to notes?
« on: February 29, 2016, 06:13:11 am »
I was EQing a melody I wrote and noticed a specific frequency I wanted to cut out within the synth. When I make the EQ cut it sounds better, however as my melody is played the specific frequency I want to remove changes with each different note.

I'm fine with leaving the cut where it is because it does improve the quality, but if being extra picky helps my music then so be it

Anyone have suggestions or a solution to fixing this?

FYI: The frequency I'm removing on the root note is 724hZ as done below (except not as drastic of a dB cut)

Some ideas I've tried -

I've been looking for the specific band I wanted to cut as it changes notes and found a rough estimate of where they hit. Went equidistant from the range of the each frequencies and tried to cut as close as possible to only those frequencies.

Add another Parametric EQ2 w/ small cut on the second note frequency and automate it to turn on/off when those notes are played?

Kinda worked

Simplest solutions win:
If you have spare filter in your synth, set it in series after the first one, set it to highpass and turn key-tracking all the way up. Here you go. Fundamental-killer.

Also, I find this bad habit being a result of dialing LP cuttoff down while having EQ (with high pass) on. It distorts your perspactive. So you can try this: Turn off your eq, slowly rise LP cuttoff until it sounds better (but not too much, just slowly) and then re-aply EQ. That also helps.

...you can get pitch tracking EQs, but they tend to be really experimental and I wouldn't trust them too much on vital sounds. Fixing it some simpler way is imho better.

Like FarleyCZ said keytracking on synth filters can achieve this but if you can't keytrack another cool trick I sometimes do is make like a 4 bar note in the piano roll of the synth I want to use, then do all the EQing I want on it to make that one note sound good and not to resonant on certain bands. Then resample that and put it into a sampler. This way it will key track automatically. The reason the note has to be pretty long is bc higher notes will play the sample faster unless you use warp modes in the sampler in Ableton. But this typically only works well on synths with full sustain and no attack. Of course you can experiment with the ASDR but it will exaggerate certain elements in the sampler depending on the note you select

i would avoid scooping out the fundamental frequencies of the sound you're using. That kinda of leads to a washed out, not really there, sound. Which can be cool if you want less of that sound there, but maybe more of an effect surrounding it. But you can achieve that with PRE/POST fader settings on a buss effect.

I know you know this, but the gain reduction of that frequency determines how much of that sound you want out of it.  I try to find a nice balance of where to sub track frequencies in between the fundamental to best sculpt the dry sound.

Hello

A company called SoundRadix makes an EQ that does (I think) what you're describing. It's a pitch tracking EQ that moves with the note/frequency being played. Hope this helps!

I quess that depends on what is the problem he's descrbing. I understood it as a sound with too strong fundamental. Slight keytracked highpassing can help this particular problem. If it's something else, then you're totally right.

At least with Serum it's pretty easy to remove a harmonic as well, using a notch filter, you just have to calibrate the keymapping correctly. Might be useful for removing those major thirds from e.g. FM sounds, which become really dissonant when playing chords. Although at some point you have to ask yourself if you'd be better off with additive synthesis :)
