Electro House Wip
« on: February 25, 2016, 08:09:48 pm »
hey guys, I started this electro project and I'd appreciate any feedback I could get :)

I've used hd25s to mix so things may be off + I'm a novice

Pretty solid start here. The kick could definitely hit harder. I like the sounds you use but they seem like they need more side chain compression or something. They feel a bit chaotic. It is definitely a new project but keep up the good work!

It sounds like a bunch of presets stringed together. Needs a touch of uniqueness to it, you know what I mean?

Thanks for the replies!, thought this would've just ended up a post several pages behind hahaha

I understand the uniqueness part, I feel like changing the lead that plays in the second part

As for sidechain, when I add more compression one of the synths I use ends up becoming squished, if you could say that changing the sound I want it to have

I would maybe try out a different kick sample. It still sounds mucky in the mix. I was just posting earlier on another topic regarding the same idea. Here is what I told them:

"Honestly when it comes to kicks, I never use any compression or layers. I find one sample I love and work with it. Sample selection is always the most important thing when it comes to kicks. Find one that fits. Export your baseline to audio and compare the waveforms. Make sure the tail of the kick is in phase with your baseline. I used to go overboard with layering kicks and adding compression and in the end, picking the right sample will go much further than any of that. "

I'm not trying to come off rude or anything, but are you sure that the compressor for the sidechaining is set up properly. It really shouldn't change the sound too much if used properly. All that should be happening is a momentary period of silence or lower volume. If you still are having problems, use either LFOtool or Kickstart to do the sidechaining for you. That's my go to now unless the sidechaining is not supposed to happen on every beat, like for dubstep drums or something.

Also, try adding something in the higher frequencies to kind of push the song a little bit, like an arp.

Share your updates!  :)

KLANG: I seen that comment from the post you replied too, I'll bare that in mind!

Altruze: I'm sure the compressor is set up properly hahaha!, I don't use much of its features (in ableton) besides threshold, ratio, attack and release... but I haven't been on this project for a few days so I forget if I have the compressor or kick start on its channel

As for the arp part, would that play through the whole drop or its second section?
