Hey everyone! I'm a new member to this forum and thrilled to be a part of this awesome and talented community of producers!    :D Anyways, I'm working on a new track, not sure what to label the genre but I would really appreciate any kind of input on the composition so far ( How it is, where it can go, what I can do better etc...) I would rather not discuss the mix because I'm really not at that stage in the song yet, but any helpful advice on the music itself will be greatly appreciated

This is cool! The mix sounds decent to me btw, but I'll try to focus more on the composition.

I overall like the composition, but I'll be nitpicky for you. There are lots of cool elements, and for the most part there are pieces that glue the sections together. One thing I think it would benefit from is a melody. You've got the high lead line that's very "note-y" -- and it's cool and it gives it that jazz feel you're talking about -- but it's maybe too note-y to be the main melody. Y'know, it doesn't hook me or stick in my head once the song is over. You could maybe take one of the sections, remove some of the notes from that line until it sounds melodic..? It depends what you're going for, but I'd personally try something like that.

I really like the buildup to 2:35, but it'd be great if the drop were more intense! Maybe some of those loud saw pads layered in, to make that part stand out from previous sections? Something to try.

Let me know if you have any specific questions and I'll do my best to get back to you. Nice work, I really like the sound of it!

0-1:15MIN, is louder than the actual verse.

Your drums aren't mixed well.

your instrumentation is fighting the drums. I get jazz is suppose to be not so drum heavy, but i think you could of  done a better job.

I don't think side chaining would of been the way to go with the kick.

that kick is pretty bad too, it really sticks out like a sore thumb.

Sounds like cheap tricks just to get things to project in the mix with out actually making them sound good.

I don't know about those hi hats being panned either, i first thought that was over compression, then i realized you do have to much compression and you have those hats auto panning lol.

honestly, the best sound out of that song are your intro and the break that goes into the second part. Mostly because you don't have drums involved in those sections.

it's tough to mix on bad headphones, and it's even tougher mixing on good headphones unless you spend like 2000$USD.

I would suggest you save up for speakers ASAP, don't skimp on them. There's a few topics on the forum about purchasing and tons of stuff online about it.

PM me if you have any other questions.

I'll give you some real genuine and good feedback.

Great composition. It definitely does stick in your head (idk what that other guy is talking about.)

I'm assuming based on this that you haven't had much experience mastering. You DEFINITELY need to do some hard work and learn how to master well. It's so crucial. I can help you along if you want just message me and I'll help you with what I can. Song is catchy, positive, with a little bit of funk in it. I like it.

Mastering is a huge thing to learn right off the bat. I can't stress enough how important learning to master is!

Sounds design is good as well. (Idk if you did it yourself or presets, but the sounds all fit eachother so well done on that.)

Sorry that guy above me was such a downer. Let me know if you want/need help with anything! I'm willing to do what I can.

My critique wasn't genuine enough?

I wasn't being a downer it was the feedback that i got from it. no use in sugar coating if you want to get better.

you have some good points to bring up, there's no need to down play the advice i've given as being mean spirited.

The only reason my case was said in such a way was because the person above me has high lighted the good parts about the track.

and if you see, it was mostly on the production and not the song content.

and as i read more, my tired eyes at the time didn't read the subject of OP'S wants as carefully as i should have.

I'll let Marrow be more of the critique from a mixing perspective considering it is not my strong point.

I will say this though. I LOVE how pretty your chords are. They are absolutely beautiful. <3 Everything that I love to hear in music from a harmonic perspective.

Yea, it is a good song, it would just sound better if it was  mixed well!!

Hey everyone! I appreciate all the advice - good and bad so criticize my song at your will. Marrow Machines, I get where you are coming from and I appreciate the (albeit seemingly brutal) honesty in your reply. I haven't really gotten to that stage in this song yet, I started it about a week and a half or so back and have collectively spent no more than 12-15 hours on it. My main focus has been on working with arrangement and harmony. Ive only been producing for about a year now so with that in mind I don't really expect the mix to sound astounding from the get go. As far as mastering goes, the most I would personally do is make sure the final mix is satisfying enough to my standards and then compress the song to a reasonable level without it creating too many artifacts. If anything I would get it professionally mastered because honestly at that point my perception would be somewhat unreliable after working on it for a long time. No hard feelings buddy

Thank you! I like creating 95% of my sounds from scratch, so no presets in this one. I think the only sounds I didn't design myself were the kick and snare, which were from a random sample pack I used. Sound design to me is one of the most fun parts about making music :)

Thank you for the feedback! Yeah, I'm on board with you on the melody part. I have something in mind to "hook" the song and I'm actually talking to a friend to sing on this track so we will see how that goes! What did you have in mind for a more intense drop, Im looking to do something unique while sticking to genre without being too cliche so if you have any ideas please throw them at me!
