I can only create dark and emotional tracks.
« on: February 18, 2016, 01:18:05 am »
Guys I tried my heart out to make progressive house, high-energy in your face dubstep, and mejestic trance. Doesn't work. If I try it squashes my creativity. I am an optimistic person irl, and seek out the positives in dark times. So when I fight who I am, my music just sucks. I love how you can't hide who you really are with music. It rips my true self out of the depths for my 30 soundcloud followers to see. Haha, can anyone else here hide it better than I can?

No. It's tough to be who you're not.

Any time i try to make some more in your face stuff, it always ends up being more chilled.

considering a more melodic upbringing when it comes to dance music, it doesn't really jive well with the artistry i want to create in terms of my music and out on the dance floor.

I don't know... I have on-and-off issues with depression and when I make music while depressed, it inevitably ends up being a happy bouncy cross between progressive house and circus music. The two or three "Sad" WIPs I have were made while I was in a really good mood.

Lots of the music I listen to is dark and gloomy, but when I try to make dark and gloomy music I end up with something happy again.

But I'm the kind of person who deals with bad situations by making lots of jokes... I guess music shows my true colors too.

which key are you playing in?

D major is bright for progressive house

try and study some of the progressive house out there, they all follow a similar pattern

I don't think it's an understanding of what keys that evoke a mood, but what the style of music OP i trying to project at any time.

It seems to be at odds with what ever is wanted to be accomplished. So it sounds like it's more of an introspective issue to actually get the music to line up with the person creating it.

This is good advice though, understanding the emotions behind keys that are associated, might help bring some balance or stability when you want to create.

but, that emotion also may be at odds with in the person, so then it circles back to the introspective issue of aligning the self with the desire of creation.

This is intriguing. My experience is the same, the last year or so of my life has been a shocker but the couple of tracks I've been working on in that time are really quite upbeat. I can't imagine wanting to make sad music when I feel better though ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Nailed it.

I'm not going to fight it anymore.

Maybe try to change your practice techniques.
Grab a progressive house track or high energy track and try to recreate it or mimic it. Obviously don't copy it exactly but use it as a guidance tool. Also maybe get a progressive house sample pack that has midi files so you can learn the chord progressions. Don't be afraid to fight it. If its what you wanna make, you gotta learn how to make it.

Don't fight yourself; make what you want to make. And that's who you really are.

I don't see how that's even a bad thing. Dark emotional tracks are the best tracks to me. My music has always been dark and I've never really had any inclination to fight that. If you really want to stray away from dark sounds, make stuff that can't be dark, like bubblegum bass or something.
