Embers | 128 bpm, house and fart noises
« on: February 15, 2016, 11:12:04 am »
Hi,

So I wanted to make a Deadmau5-style chill house track but things got a bit out of hand. I'd appreciate any feedback on sounds, writing and mixdown. In particular, does this make you move at all? Is there something that is super awkward (or is there anything that is not :D)? Also, do you think it's a good idea to end the track like this, or does it need an outro?

I like it. It might have a bit of that Brazil (second edit) -ish feel when finished. :)

Imho:
- I'd go even further with cutoff automation on that stab. + wet it in reverb a bit.
- I think it needs some atmospheres or drones. ...in mau5e's manner may be. :)
- Drops might benefit from a bit more percussion.
- That beak down neeeeeds some heavily reverbed pads. :)

...but don't overdo it, because that's called being a d***k.

Thanks for the feedback! I think I'll have to bring a mau5track to reference with in this project.

OK, I'll try that. My problem has been that the stab sounds kind of dull and boxy with the cutoff set low, and I'm not sure how to fix that. Maybe a reference track will help.

I have been thinking about this, but thus far I've been too lazy to find samples/learn how to use those. Will help to make the intro more interesting for sure.

What kind of percussion did you have in mind? I kind of felt that the basses and synths were enough for percussive elements especially in the first drop, so I never even considered anything but the basic drums.

Roger. I'm also now thinking to make the kick "booms" bigger. The only problem is that I'm running out of memory with this project (last one I'll do with a 32 bit daw), so need to start bouncing some stuff if I'm going to add any instruments.

excited nonetheless

I love the drop on this one, the mixdown sounds really nice! I think you definitely have a lot of room to add atmosphere to your intro/buildup, that seems to be where this song is lacking. Seriously cool drop though! this is dope.
but im excited nonetheless

The drop is awesome!

Some notes:

- more FX and micro transitions
- more percussion
- the snare could be very very way more stronger (just a bit)

As said before fx and foley would crank this badboy up to a whole new level. Its a really solid track and I really like it.

Thanks a lot for the comments. I now have a pretty clear idea of how to improve this track... Already did some recordings of a dishwasher, let's see if that helps here :D

Still not quite sure what kind of percussion you guys are talking about though, but I'll try to experiment!

Bro, keep it as 4x4 at some point during the verse  in the first part.

I like the breaks, but it's not consistent enough to make me want to keep dancing.

They should be peppered in, and right now you have to much pepper.

It's like a weird mix of dubstep and house (basically a stepper's reggae beat).

I think if you allowed for some consistency it could really shine in the first part of the main section after the intro.

The second drop is cool cause it's dubstep.

I think your intro could be shorter and have a better and more deliberate transition into the drop from the intro.

Your kick and snare are really banging, i think if you come in with those things as a 4x4 initially, no silence or breaks, it would really get things pumpin.

that break at around 1.14 min mark, would be good to add in closed hats that match the kick of the 4x4 and open hat on the up beat (regular house sound)

I think you can re work the melody during the song when ever it comes in after 1.15 to make it smooth and flow better, because of how ever many breaks you have, it really ruins the flow of the entire section.
that squelchy bass line you have really is the sound that makes me want to move the most, the surround elements of musical content are really lack luster compared to that single sound.

Also, bring your cymbals up in the mix. They're drowned out by the power of the kick and snare, i can still hear them but they don't shine like they should.

Pretty solid mix, not to offending to listen to.

These comments were made on consumer speakers, if you want more detail response pm me and i can pop it on my monitors.
Josh Huval: Honestly, the guys who are making good art are spending their time making it.

^ This is a solid 5/5 feedback and I will need some time to digest it. Thanks! I agree with the points about danceability, that's not a forte of mine at all.

As someone who's still really just learning, this just sounds like it has a lot of potential and its cool you did make what you were going for, I feel the Deadmau5 influence for sure...nice job with that    :)
