what do you guys think of this? Trying to decide where to go from here. Still really rough and could change a lot based on your input!

This definitely has potential. I don't generally go in for vocals, but this sounds like a track that would be good with one. Another thing I would try would be to get a straight 1/2 beat arpeggiated chord progression (hope that makes sense) going around the low mids.

Keep it up!

Put the drums in half time and add a "whut" chant on the offbeat :P

OK jokes aside (even though I'm only half joking when I say that) I like the overall "feel" of the track but I feel like the snare/clap doesn't have enough "presence" in the mix. I guess what I'm trying to say is that maybe you should try adding another clap on the 2s and 4s (so I'd be 1 2 3 4) but place the sample 10 - 20ms before the snare giving it a sense of groove in relation to the rest of the beat.

thanks for the feedback guys! I will get around to messing with the drums tomorrow when I can listen at a more comfortable volume (roommates are sleeping currently). I did add some stuff to the track so if you wanna check it out I updated the link in the OP and you can also just click here

Yeah, I second that. Pacing is wrong. It's too quick. Either change BPM or make the beat and arppegio slower. But potential is there. :)

Fun stuff! I think one thing that's killing the groove in the latter half is the sidechaining, the release is too slow. As for where to go, if I was writing this, I might try to use the saw pluck as a lead in the breakdown/buildup.

Alright, so more changes have been made. I really didn't fuck with the sidechain release at all because I think the groove sounds fine as is. If you guys really think its that much of a problem then i'll look into it, but so far I am really happy with this. I want to add more overall to this song, and vocals are definitely in the works but for now im really thrilled with how this is turning out!

this feels great already, I'd be excited to hear the vocals you mentioned though! Those could really bring the track up to it's full potential :)

I like the arrangement of this track and the melodies are really energetic. The synth at 1:22 may sound better if it was more full sounding and without side-chain. Good stuff! ;D
