Melodic breakbeat mixed with chillstep WIP
« on: February 09, 2016, 06:16:12 pm »
Hi guys.

This is one of those tracks that has been around my hard drive for quite a time. I'm kind of getting tired of it. Is it good? I can't tell anymore.
https://soundcloud.com/farleycz/our-pasts-wip/s-tObGw

Looking forward to any tip or opinion. :)

Damn dude!  Loving the feeling of this one, you deserve some more attention especially in this thread, but maybe people don't feel anything is wrong;D

I think that the only thing that stood out to me is the mix of that heavy growler bass, it feels like its dropping beneath it's frequency limit or something and isnt getting a full tone in, I would recommend undermixing it a little and adding in a bass up an octave or something with some more "tone" to it!  It would make it really pop.  So far this is sick though man, really enjoyable and I share a similar style to you.
the vocal chops are really really nice, and mixed very well.  I would add some more dynamic on the final transition to the chillstep drop, like a stronger buildup or more suspense, crescendo perhaps.  I think the final chorus phrase drags out a bit, maybe change some things, but Im really lovin this!

Keep it up dude.

Wow, thanks! Great points! I guess I might put this one on hold for some time, so I can feel it again properly, but I'll definitely look at your suggestions. Thanks again! :)

Love the atmosphere in the beginning. How did you do those glitchy/metallic sounds in the background?
I think the growl bass idea is real cool. Something is missing in terms of grit tho. They feel a bit muted and aren't as biting as I'd personally want.
The vocal used is a great idea, a little loud tho. You could probably drop it a db or 2.

Overall, I liked it. I say...don't over think it. But if you did want to overthink it: on the 2nd half of the last chorus, double time it and glitch the fuck out of it to drive it home. I'd be willing to help if you wanted, I really dig your vibes here. Would be a great ending song for a set.

I'm just baffled you don't have more followers! You have a great style, and the mix is pleasant to the ear, at least on my PortaPros. The chorus of this track takes me to the 90's in a positive way. Some comments:

I also feel that the growl bass is lacking some "bite". I'm not sure how to achieve this, though, so please share if you have an idea :D The other, KOAN sound -like wobble fill could also be more present.

In the second chorus, it might be cool to hear the melody taken to more epic proportions, like an octave up and longer notes in the ends of phrases maybe.

Thanks guys so much for a lsiten! :) I feel more and more like this needs a bit of rest now, though.

Dunno if I'm happy about the 90' vibe too much. :/ With some expections (some ATB, Chicane, Miles) I kinda hate 90' electronica.

I also feel that the growl bass is lacking some "bite".
I feel y'all about the grit. Might distort or layer it a bit more when/if I get back to it. :)

The other, KOAN sound -like wobble fill could also be more present.
Now THAT's a compliment, thank you! :D

Foley effects. Nothing fancy. :)

Ok that's a cool idea. Will try it or come for help if needed, thanks for the offer! :)

Should have been more specific, I didn't mean to imply that this sounds dated or anything. With the 90s comment I was referring to something like HIM: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IPrKLqNAsSY :D. They have somewhat similar melancholy leads in their songs.

And by escalation I just meant that the melody itself could be capitalized a bit more, but I also get the stylistic choice to keep it laid-back. Another idea would be to add a higher-pitch counter-melody when the chorus repeats in the end, just to build it up a bit and keep it interesting. Or you can go the double-time glitch route...

Usually I'd consider some melody variation or support melody in such a case, but glitching it sounds like more fun actually. What do you guys mean by "double time", though. Making a beat slower for that glitching part?

I mean: on the 2nd half of the last chorus speed up your drum hits (double time them) and make the rhythm move quicker. This may help climax the song or have the listener realize it's driving towards an end.

And yes, I love glitching audio. You can get some really unique sounds.

I too, but usually for percussive sounds. I'm thinking about glitching either the whole thing, or the major elements one by one in some wierd way.

Thanks guys for the notes and inspiration! :)

Funny because I never glitch percussive sounds. I should tho.

But yeah, try it many different ways. Glitch the entire track as one (may sound bad) or choose elements that you think will give you the glitch sound you want. Although it's tough to tell what audio sounds will give you what....kind of an experience thing.
