How To Trap (lol)
« on: February 05, 2016, 12:03:12 pm »
Hey m8s,

So, i really used to hate most (festival) trap music, however I went on a San Holo listening streak, and i found his music so beautiful and inspiring. Like real 10/10 quality stuff. Anyways, I have literally 0 trap knowledge.
Whats common to do? Make your own kicks, or just download sample packs? If so, which sample packs are good ones? And what would be the best way to make own trap kicks?

San Holo is really good, glad to see he has been getting more and more recognition lately. I would suggest not trying to sound too much like any one artist but if you want to start making trap, try both making your own kicks and samples, and using sample packs. Sample packs can often be a great quick starting point if you have an idea you want to get into your DAW right away but it's always good to layer your own samples with ones you found to sound more like yourself if that makes sense.

Anyways, making kicks is probably the easiest drum to synthesize imo so I'll give you a quick rundown. Basically a kick drum in its simplest form is a sine wave with a quick pitch envelope drop from really high frequency all the way down to sub bass frequency. The lowest frequency then becomes the fundamental. You'd be hard pressed not to find a synth that has this capability. My personal favorite is Serum because once your have your sine pitched down you can add real kick drum attacks via the noise oscillator. Then to get it grittier you can add distortion but apply it carefully otherwise you'll get a sort of hardstyle kick, unless that's the sound you're going for. If you want it to sound slightly more realistic you can add a light short reverb to the high end so it sounds like you recorded it in a room. I tend to do a lot of resampling in different layers of processing, including different compression and limiting to really get the transients right. Hope this helps!! If you have any questions on this or making other kinds of drums I'd be happy to help.

I like FM8 for kick synthesis. The envelopes are really flexible and a bit of FM modulation can create some quick cool harmonics for the attack.

...but don't overdo it, because that's called being a d***k.

Check out Cymatics.fm for literally the best free sample packs. They have a few trap ones with drums used by big trap producers like Jupe and ARMNHMR and whateva.
I make really spacey future stuff. Under my new project, Indus, I have not released anything yet. But when I do, it'll be at https://soundcloud.com/gonewiththestars

Thanks for the tips guys! I downloaded the Cymatics packs and the 808s sound good as far I can tell. What are the best Youtube tutorials out there you guys reckon? There's so many of them and I don't have enough trap-listening-experience to really tell a good kick from a worse kick haha.

i wouldn't get too worried about the initial sound of the kick, mainly just listen for what tone and style of kick really appeals to you! it is a bit subjective, but i tend to think that the most important part of the kick is that it meshes and compliments the other elements of your track. Granted, don't take that too literally, you should still get quality samples to start with, but don't lose sleep over finding the "perfect" sample before you even test it in your track with the other pieces :) hope that helps!
