Lyrics/Melody
« on: February 03, 2016, 02:41:31 am »
My last post on here was about trying to work with vocalists and I got some great advice and feedback. However, I still am no closer to finishing my tracks that need vocals so I though I'd go down the Porter/Madeon route and maybe try my own. I'm not the best singer in the world but I can get by, and with production I might be able to turn it into something decent.

I'm finding it really hard to write lyrics, and even if I get something nice, I still can't think of melodies that I think are engaging or anthemic enough. I'm trying to make my music quite catchy and anthemic in terms of repeatable, simplistic choruses and more depth in the verses.

Does anyone have any advice on songwriting lyrically?

I would've thought this would be pretty tricky to just jump on into. My hunch is that songwriting is a skill like any other, with rules and formulas and the requirement to spend a ton of time practising..

I too am just getting into my own lyric writing.. so far I have only worked with lyrics written by other people. I think I'm quite good at coming up with stuff that is catchy, but my lyric writing is not where I want it to be yet. So, in order to try to get better at it, I've started getting into poetry. Here's a list: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/books/10589153/15-best-poetry-books-of-all-time.html I have 4 of the books in that list. I remember during Crywolf's AMA, someone asked him this same question, and the answer he gave was to read a lot of good poetry. I'm currently reading Seamus Heaney's New Selected Poems 1966 - 1987. Also, study the lyrics of songs you like. Like with anything, it takes practice... you know, the 10,000 hours thing. Everyday, I write a song with lyrics on my guitar, verse/chorus/verse/chorus/bridge type of thing. I even write out the song in my Moleskine (the one with the music staff paper). I write out the melody, chords and lyrics. Hope this helps!

Normally I work on lyrics for months or years, but if I need to come up with something faster, here are some things I do:
  • Start by asking yourself, "What do I have to say?"
  • Describe something surreal, even bordering on nonsensical, but avoid anything that even reminds you of a cliche. (Cliches become more abundant around the following topics: love, relationships, sex, drugs, partying, growing up, the urban lifestyle, left-wing political statements.)
  • Keep your rhyming extremely tight. Setting these limits will force your brain to find the right word.
  • Think about the kind of sounds that fit the mood of the song, and find words that have those sounds. (For example, for hard aggressive songs I like to use words that have a lot of hard Ds and Ts and Ks in them, especially words that start with those sounds.)
  • Find an obscure but interesting quote in a book or by a famous person, and riff on that.
  • Pick something dumb and trivial (like, your favorite pair of shoes or what you had for breakfast) and write the deepest, most profound things you can think of about it.
  • Write in another language.

Write poetry often. Sometimes you can pull lines from your existing works and use them in your songs. I personally don't write poetry as much as I used to, but two things I like to do are use slant rhyme and rhyme a word at the end of a line with a word in the middle of the next. It gives you the ability to get out of the "trap" of strict rhyming schemes and to play with the rhythm of the words. Lastly, try writing things cryptically/ambiguously. Maybe on the surface, the lyrics sound like a love song, but underneath them is a completely different meaning.
