Multiple Days/Switching
« on: February 03, 2016, 12:46:58 am »
I've used ableton to for a while now and I know it quite well, but I find as soon as I open it up it just drains me and I close I down. I recently installed cubase elements as I had a disc lying around. When I open up cubase I just have a sort of spark and want to work, do you guys find that using another daw is helpful or have you found that you have eventually just switched?

I'm not fair here as this happened quite long time ago, but I've tried FL (7) and Cubase (SX-3 :D) and found both offputting by amount of windows you need to work with. ...the same moment you had with Cubase now I had with Ableton back then as it works pretty much in one window only. ...and I haven't left it since. :)

...but don't overdo it, because that's called being a d***k.

the quickest way to get into this from my experience is..

have a template that you have made ready so you can get your ideas on the daw asap
like have a channel for your kick, bass, percussion, lead,  etc

chuck on some pre made loops so your brain get get going, it doesnt have to be the perfect loop
play some chords, try and have fun

think of the blank canvas as the place to put your art, its like drawing a picture on a white piece of paper

its best to stick to one daw that you like, i was on logic before, and then i tried ableton and i found ableton to be the quickest to get my ideas on, its alright to switch daws, they all do the same thing kinda

I started with Reason 4 initially and while I found it to be great for getting really unique sounds with it's "virtual hardware" approach and since it doesn't have VST support so you don't sound like everyone with Massive or FM8. But everything else about it to me was really slow, like arranging clips and loops and samples, so I made the switch to Ableton 8 and have since upgraded to 9 and the difference in creativity is astounding. Plus I can still rewire Reason into it but I never really do that. Ultimately I think it's about whatever tool works best for you personally, people have different workflows and a lot of well known producers use multiple DAWs for different things. Koan Sound for instance rewires Reason into Ableton if I remember correctly.

see that's the thing i know how to use ableton and the workflow is very fast but it just has a weird effect on me. I'm going set a template as you said and change how i work and see if i can change this as i don't particularly want to spend the money on Cubase when you can achieve pretty similar results in both.

This is an interesting question. Ableton's interface doesn't look very welcoming to me, whereas I like that of Logic, which is what I currently use. The look and feel of your DAW might not seem that important but I think it is. It can be a subtle thing that you don't consciously register but which does affect your motivation, even though there might not seem to be a good reason why looks and aesthetics should affect your enthusiasm for creating things.

I would say that if one DAW makes you feel positive about working on music and another doesn't, it helps to try and figure out why. But even if you can't, and even if it doesn't seem to make sense that it would have an influence on you, I would accept that it does, and go with whatever helps you get creative.

The template will help immediately. Less time building the same things you would put on every track. More time to get creative.
