"More Than Enough WIP" | Trying to practice mixing
« on: January 06, 2016, 06:43:51 am »
Hi friends, I'm working on this track

https://instaud.io/h6k

Most of the music I've made in the past has been kinda ambient-ish but I'm trying to learn how to mix music that's a little more complex, has more of a beat to it, lots of stuff going on in different ranges, etc.  Could really use some advice on mixing this, especially the idea I've started at the end of this mp3, or any other suggestions you have for anything I could improve.  Thanks!

The beginning stuff is very pretty! Engineering-wise, I would say to at least sidechain the bass to the kick, and maybe *lightly* sidechain the reverb to the kick as well to give the click of the kick some more presence.

As for the last part, it's very odd in contrast to the beginning. The crunchy part felt a bit off rhythm with the kick, and I think that you might want to add in some sort of pluck to this, either during the part you uploaded, or in the next section of the drop.

Really interesting stuff. Also, personally I think that your style of music would greatly benefit from some nice chill vocal layers over the pads too :)

Thanks for the advice!  Yeah, the second part was more just another idea I was working on within the same track, definitely need to write some kind of transition into it.  I'll try those other changes too.  Thanks!
