Thomas Penton sound pack for harder processed kicks, Robert Babicz sound pack for softer 808 analog kicks.

Better off just finding one good kick than wasting hours layering in my book. I might add a very very tiny top end sample sometimes.

I use both samples I have found over time and more recently I really cant say enough good things about KICK by sonic academy.
first off....it makes sense to hold a SMALL library of kicks you like......find kicks that work for your productions and stick to them. Maybe even export already processed kicks from your tracks and reuse them. Honestly if you have a sample library of 15 good kicks that work for you....why do you need a library of 500 kicks you don't use?

As for the KICK pluging......its amazing. The versatility is great and you can easily change the tonality of your kick to suit your basslines and also change the amp filters! its great for adjusting the length of your kicks to fit better with your track. KICK for the win.

its good to use different layers for a kick ;) for example some stereo separation on the high part of the kick whilst the low part is mono works
since KICK is released its actually pretty easy for everyone to create good kicks even without using any sample although of course you can use samples if you like

A mix of samples and Sonic Academy's KICK plugin.

KICK does a great job of nailing the sub and low end, and then I use other kick samples as layers to build the rest. Often KICK is enough on it's own to get something decent straight off the bat, and saves the tedious job of trawling through hundreds of samples for 'the right one'.
Build it, and they will come.

I try to layer in my own samples.

Gives me some level of control when i am in the mix.

I find that getting a diverse sample pack and using subtractive EQ gets me great results. Every track is different and reeling in the release time and low/top end of my kicks is a must for me.
Would love to try the KICK plugin at some point though--I've heard good things.

I am a sample pack whore. I use Black Octopus's Leviathan quite a bit. I also love Sample Magic's stuff.

Honestly layering is stupid in my opinion. You can really mess up the low end by doing this (even if you are good at EQ'ing)

1-2 Samples -> Volume Shaper 4 -> Maximus -> Multipass + Disperser -> Reverb -> Maximus

If I can't pick a good single sample, I'll find a sample with a good transient/attack, another with a good tail, and ASD envelope both of them appropriately to avoid phase cancellation issues.

why? you just cut out the highs of kick 1 at some frequency and cut out the lows of kick 2 at the same frequency - nothing changes
