False 9 - ID [Prog]
« on: January 25, 2016, 07:44:28 pm »
Hey guys, I wanted to do something fun and different so I made this arcade-y style prog song. I wanted it to sound like it could fit right into Mario Kart and I think its turning out alright. Im only just starting the mixing process so theres still a lot of polishing to do but id love to know what you guys think of the general idea and the mix so far.

Edit: Intro and outtro are still really rough

I'm not sold on that double time bit in the middle.

Also, the variation of the main lead that starts at 1:29 - the way the last chord of that loop is sustained for a whole bar doesn't quite feel right. Some synth stabs an octave higher layered on top might work, but obviously your mix is pretty busy already.

Those things aside, I fucking love this. Reminds me of Animal Rights or that Community Funk track. I wish more people made banging techy rollers like this

Your drums are on point yo! I'd be interested in what sample packs you're utilizing. Besides that this song bumps...so clean and flowing. You say the intro and outro are unfinished but I think they are satisfactory honestly. Maybe add a few more layers. But I can't really say anything else this is quite amazing.

Thanks guys!

@submelodic- The arcade samples come from youtube, drums from all sorts of different places. The break drums are a couple loops from DnB packs that I cut up.

There's some kind of fill at 1:27ish (and again later in the track) that feels like it should be further forward in the mix - it's kind of obscured atm.

This is sick though. Out of curiosity, how long have you been working on it? Either in terms of hours you've put into it or days/weeks working on it. Or both.

Yeah youre right, im gonna change that fill around. This one came together fairly quickly, I got the drop idea a week ago, the meat of the track came together in 3-4 days and ive been slowly mixing it since

Holy shit man, I absolutely am in love with this, the part around 2:15 doesnt convince me though tbh, but thats just my opinion other than that, its amazing!!!!!!!

I like the idea you got in this one.

Maybe it's personal preference but i'd try playing around with some more saturation in those plucks that appear around 2:00. They sound a little too clean for my taste especially with the electro vibe you're giving off here. (but i'm also listening on shitty iphone headphones sooooooo take it with a grain of salt lol)

Have you thought of putting an amen break style groove sample in there at 2:15? What you have is good, but my ears were expecting something different to push the track forward.

Good work though! Track is super fun! ;D

Thanks again guys, I'll see if I can throw in a different drum pattern for the break part, I see what you guys are saying. I've tried beefing it up a bit but I think theres still a disconnect. Ill rest my ears and have another go tomorrow

Another trick you could try with those long sustained chords is to use a pitch LFO with a long attack so that the longer the chord is held, the more vibrato there is
