Agrippa [composition finished, need mixing advice]
« on: January 25, 2016, 12:11:33 am »
Thoughts:
opening is lazy but I'm gonna work on that more once I come up with more ideas for it
Mixing seems to be on and off to me which is why I wanna ask for a separate pair of ears
I accidentally left a big ol' gap of silence at the end, ignore that hahaha

feel free to also give suggestions towards the composition or anything else! It's a secret upload so I can't embed it, sadly..

kick at the beginning sounds too stereo and doesn't really fit in the mix too well and clap in the drop is also kinda lost in the mix. the rhodes type synth at 3:10 also kinda sounds a tiny bit muddy when the drums hit, along with a few other elements further on. great mix otherwise man.

i think the intro should be a little less loud on the synth, and bring it in more gradually. the buildup is killer

I figured it might be a good call to fix up the clap, I always felt it sounded fine the way it is but that's what I got the most: the clap was too lost in it all. Good catch on the rhodes too!

Thank you two for the feedback!

You have a unique sound for sure, that intro reminds me of the creativity of Flying Lotus in some points! As far mixing goes, from my point of few I think you've nailed down a pretty good mix. The only thing I would say is that it sounds a little flat at some points because there lacks the faintest amount of brightness on the top end. I think you could brighten up that drop bass synth a little and your drums just a touch to really open up that spectral range for the listener, if that makes sense.

Those basses on the drops are expertly mixed I'd have to say, the stereo imaging is dope af. I'd really be interested in how you made those. Also the transition from the first drop into the calmer atmopsphere of the break is so clean I loved sinking into that new section.

That's all I could offer you I hope it helps.

Bit of a late response, but thanks for the feedback!

Also the basses: It was nothing too complicated as most of it happens in the synths, Serum. Serum is very capable of only doing things inside of it especially thanks to it's resampling features. The first one you hear is Serum, two wavetables with two LFO sources, one functioning as a pitch envelope to have a small 'hit' at each start, and the other just moving both wavetables. Both oscillators are linked to a phaser that's being moved by the same LFO moving the wavetables. Post processing is just CamelCrusher in phat mode, some low end cutting and a high-end boost, and a send to an effects chain for some stereo imaging.

The others are basically the same (including the faster one at 1:48 which is just the wavetable moving differently) except the bass at 2:25 which is a bit more. Two wavetables and a phaser with a LFO moving the tables, first one being bent positively. I stacked a noise wavetable under it to give it more of a texture, post process wise is just some reverb which is then all crushed under CamelCrusher which is why you hear the reverb's release after a break.

I hope I explained it well enough for you to understand because frankly I'm not too good at explaining myself :P
