Metallic Sounds
« on: January 06, 2016, 05:34:43 am »
Yello.

Just been wondering, some recent songs, a lot prevelant in some trap tracks is something like a Metallic-ish sounding lead, very cool sounding.

A track reference would be Rattlesnake by Rogue.

Just wondering yeah, how would one go about creating a sound like this, I mean is it a technique relatable to many synthesizers, or somewhat exclusive to a few synths?

Looking to see how to apply these techniques in both leads and ambient pads and such.
---Any help on this would be greatly appreciated. :)

Thanks!

In synths like Massive and Serum there are some wavetables that make metallic sounds by default. You can also get some really metallic sounds with certain filters. Also, if you use Ableton, the resonator is a really cool way to add metallic harmonics to your sounds. Just play around with stuff and see what you can come up with :)

Try comb filters with feedback and resonators. They are helpful for this kind of sounds :)

delays with very small times (like 1-5 milliseconds) and high feedback make some really cool metallic sounds. automating the time is also really fun

One of the keys to making things sound bell-y or metallic is the idea of frequencies being introduced that are outside of the normal harmonic series for the tone. SeamlessR has a How to Synth video on this subject!

Fun fact: this is the operation behind Ableton's resonator

If you haven't seen it, here's a cool little video on how NGHTMRE got the metallic-y sounds in Street. (Mostly just cool sample processing, but still awesome)

it amazes me how many effects are actually built off the use of delay

a lot of people have already given you some solid answers, but if you own harmor, try messing with the prism option. also, resampling samples that already have a metallic sound can yield really interesting results.
one of my favorite ways of messing up a sound is with chorus, flanger, or phaser with no time variables, just completely static. phaser in particular sometimes gives a really hollow metallic sound if you get the settings just right.
