Listen to Aphex Twin,Squarepusher,Venetian Snares,Autechre,Xanopticon.

These guys are the best beatmake/programmers in the world, listen to them, try to reproduce some of their beats pattern.

If you can make a breakcore/idm/dnb beat you can make any kind of beat.

Are people actually y using the term "idm"? What is that supposed to cover?

I got to say that complex beats as Aphex Twin´s are not a good place to start when learning to make music.  His drums are seldom the driving force in his tracks, and the beats are usually complementing the theme rather than being it.

IDM:Its supposed to mean intelligent dance music, yeah its a pretty stupid name(and insulting and pretentious) for a genre  i guess...
I think he has some drum works that range from not so complex drum tracks to extremely complex beat making. So it really depend on which track we are talking about.
But you could take a track like Iz Us or some analord track thats like in between, complex yet not too complex and work your way upward to stuff like Drukqs and The Tuss.
I think if you want to learn you have to listen to the very best and try to understand how its done.

Add a little swing can be cool.
Also if you make a break very often the kick and main snares dont fall on the beat at the same time, you alternate between them to have the dialogue between them.
I just check on google if you search for drumming basic pattern or something like that on images you get music sheet with patterns.(if you know how to read music sheets that could help)
Also there seems to be some youtube videos for beginner drummers and tutorials on google. But that would bore me i prefer to listen to tracks then just drums alone.
