Organizing valuable tips, tricks, information and references
« on: January 22, 2016, 09:47:48 am »
Hi,

Dealing with the vast amount of great information here on the forum, reddit and other places on the internet, even with networking with people in person, I struggle with keeping everything written down organized and structured to be referenced to. To experiment and just start somewhere - I've created a notebook in OneNote with several subfolders. From composition, to specifics like "reverb tricks" and "delay tips", and "dealing with creative block", notes from books, written down which plugins I'm using including a link/button for opening one's manual. Just got an idea for making a shortcut to a link for a YouTube search to "X plugin + tips/guide".

How do you deal with all the notes you may have written down? Software/web based or physical like a Moleskine?

There is a lot of information that I write down pen and paper note style. I have recently begun to write notes in a Word document so I can easily Ctrl+F anything I need, and I'm in the progress of transferring all of my old notes and stuff to this document.

This is sort of a 'table of contents' for my document, however I have not updated it. Each sub-section refers to the topic at hand, name of the article I've taken notes on, or whatever. (It's really not updated yet at all)

Here is an example of what is contained in each Chapter

I have a really special markup system I use. It's in my head.

I use Microsoft OneNote, and try to organize things based on where I got the information and what kind of stuff it's supposed to be:

Awesome, may I ask what you named your different tabs?

NGHTMRE's Pro Session is so valuable philosophic wise - it lacks a technical aspects, thought he makes you think and listen for yourself instead of giving defined answers on what's right or wrong - which there is none of.

Awesome, may I ask what you named your different tabs?

Well, most of the tabs have their names right there for you to see, but they've changed a bit since I last posted them so I'll give a general rundown of my personal organization structure really quickly:

I have the "General Tips" folder as the first thing I see, which is where most of my quick-entry pages go (things that come to mind during walks or at the gym, ideas for DJ transitions, and other stuff that I'm probably entering on my phone without paying too much attention to grammar. Then I have a few section group pages: Notes, Work, and Miscellaneous.

Notes are where I ended up putting all of those masterclass sessions and methodology videos, divided up into sections based on what they're from: EDMProd.com tutorials, Ill Gates methodology workshop, youtube video notes, and my own personal notes from reading various manuals.

Work is where anything involved in music production goes - liner notes for songs, ideas for new tracks, organization for EPs and whatnot, and anything that is meant primarily as a personal reference and idea platform.

Misc is just anything that doesn't get thrown into the other two sections - my ideas for practice regiments, for example.

I have a folder in my computer with several other folders filled with text files and pictures.

Got a lot of stuff written down, but i try to turn it into a digital format as soon as i can.

Josh Huval: Honestly, the guys who are making good art are spending their time making it.

I used to keep an Excel spreadsheet with all of the tips & techniques I could find, organized in different tabs by category, similar to what you do. but eventually it became way too wordy to actually be useful, and I became obsessed over making it "complete". it gave me false confidence in my abilities, and it was distracting me from staying busy on music, so I deleted it, which was super liberating. and my brain retained the most important concepts in there anyway.

now I keep a single "notes" file on my phone with short bullets of any new tips or tricks that I find, or any ideas I think of. it's more of a "to do" list than a complete library of techniques. once I feel like a technique has become second nature to me, I'll delete it from the list. I'm sure different things work for different people, but this method is a nice balance for me.

I like that! I'll take that into account the next time I care update it. Instead of just add stuff, erase and replace what's already learnt and put into practice.

I write everything down in a physical notebook because it just helps it stick in my head, but I've been lazy recently and just started accumulating notes on my laptop that need to be written, so I think I'm gonna have to start a master document and abandon the physical notebook strategy. It sucks for finding shit anyway.

Memo in my phone for notes when I'm out. Otherwise, I have a doc. on my computer that I refer back to.  Also, youtube videos are saved/liked for future reference.

Here's a pretty comprehensive guide to mixing that I have saved as well: http://www.scribd.com/doc/5220863/Ravenspiral-Guide-to-Music-Theory

I'm an Evernote premium user. If it's web based I'll just save it into Evernote. These days I write down stuff A LOT in a Moleskine, writing it down yourself helps you retain the information better.
