Fabfilter? What do you guys think?

I haven't used too many 3rd party plugins, but I've heard many great things about Fabfilter's Pro-Q 2.

Why is it so great? Please tell me! And are their other plugins great?

The reason I ask is I'm not really a huge fan of torrenting, so I wanted to get your guys' opinions on these plugins before I try/buy them.

I won FabFilter's Volcano 2 in contest a while ago and I love it to death. The filters are all super clean and it has some really wicked capabilities. The only thing about it is that its a little bit slower to work with in comparison to most other filters and it uses more resources than most, so I tend to just rely on basic EQs for a lot of that unless I really need it's capabilities.

As for Pro-Q 2 I've also heard tons of great things about, not to mention it looks great, but logic's channel EQ has proved a great reason not to purchase it yet.

I'm pretty sure they have trial versions / let you download prior to buying so I'd say develop your own opinion on them while you can.

Fabfilter have 30-day fully functional demos from memory, so you can give their plugins a good run before committing. They also have a multi-buy discount if you grab a few things at once.

I've only got Pro-Q (yet to upgrade) to compare with, but it's my go-to EQ for most jobs. It's a very clean surgical EQ with very little ringing or artifacts when making steep notches and cuts. From their demos, I reckon Saturn, Timeless, and Pro-C (or Pro-MB) are all worthy buys if you've got the cash and want the discounts!

Pro-Q2 is superb for controlled EQing.

For a start, Fabfilter's interfaces are fantastic - you get a great visualisation of what you're doing to the sound.

Pro-Q2 gives you all sorts of options in terms of EQ curves...

If all it had was its "basic" EQing features with Mid-Side processing it'd still be my favourite EQ for sculpting sound, but it's also got lots of other stuff I haven't even got into yet (frequency-spectrum matching, linear phase EQing etc)... it's very, very good. Not super-colourful, but ridiculously useful.

For filters... I like a bit of dirt so I personally prefer Sugarbytes WOW2 to Volcano, because WOW is immediately coloured.

Saturn's great too: it's not the only multi-band saturator/distortion plug on the market, but I'm starting to play with features like the band-specific dynamics, and tuned feedback, and again it's got an immaculate user interface.

Pro-Q2 is excellent. Very flexible in comparison to most other EQ's I've used, and it's very precise and clean. If I'm doing a bit of additive EQ'ing and want some colour, my go to EQ is Waves REQ6, but if I want it clean then I'll use this.

I've had limited use of some other FF plugins but I have tried the Micro filter a bit and that's the only one I didn't like from FF.

I own every FF plugin except their synths and Timeless2, and I use them everywhere.  They're my go-to plugins for EQ, compression, limiting, saturation, de-essing, and filtering.

Thanks everyone--I think my primary interest is only the Pro-Q right now, so I'm going to try out the trial first before I make any moves.

Fabfilter's plugins are just brilliant plugins. I use the EQ for all projects. You can solo out a specific frequency which makes removing resonant sounds super easy. Their EQ would be the first third party plugin I would purchase.

It's really cool. Usually I prefer my DAW's built-in EQ, but I would use Pro-Q2 if I need any extra tweak.

From my experience with their plugins, they're pretty run-of-the-mill. I sometimes still fool around with them, but the effects that most of their plugins achieve can most likely be done with the stock plugins from your DAW and end up using less CPU. I will say that the UI is pretty good for most of their plugins, but when it comes to the power of them, they're just a drop in the bucket (imo)
