Questions about new equipment
« on: January 19, 2016, 12:20:28 am »
So later in the week I plan to purchase a new pair of monitors and a midi controller.

My bed room is 6 feet wide and about 20 feet long ( the attic ) ; considering the size of my room would 8" monitors be to big  or ? I was considering the YAMAHA HS8. I really need monitors that will give me good low frequencies

Also, what midi controller would be ideal for under 200$

Other than that, what other pieces of equipment should I consider investing my money into. (I already own a audio interface)

the krk's are good monitors man, not too exp and good quality, any midi keyboard is good man, but you have to learn scales and chords to make a melody, thats the most frustrating part

invest in a good headphone so you can do the mixing or arranging at night or on the laptop

I have the KRK's now, I have the Rokit 5's. But when I bought them, the dude who worked at Sweetwater, called me up and told me the Yamahas we're a better buy etc etc. Ever since, he's had me thinking, so I figured I'd ask around here. My only complaint would be the subwoofer isn't as "loud" as I expected.

On the other hand, I have a pair of studio beats, which I've come to understand aren't the best pair of headphones to mix down with, so I'm considering a pair of the audio-technicians, unless someone suggests anything better ...

For a pair of monitors in the price range I would say go for the JBL LSR305s. If you aren't able to get those the M-Audio BX5 D2s are your next best bet. Got to demo them at a music store and thats what sounded the most ideal to me. The rokits were alright, but the bass seemed a little odd to me.

As for midi controllers, you should be a little more specific with what you are asking. Do you want weighted keys or not? What size of a keyboard are you thinking? What controls do you want / how many (think knobs, wheels, and sliders)? A lot of these answers you may get from your personal opinion, but also make sure to buy what is appropriate based on the context of how you produce!
