Hotline Mämmi
« on: January 18, 2016, 05:07:27 pm »
This is a project I started over a year ago. I've been working on it during this time and the track has gone trough a few versions.

I feel it would be a shame to let this track go, because I'm kinda feeling the composition. It is not my finest work and there is some mud, but I'm trying my best at polishing this track. I might have made some bad decisions while composing but I feel this track is somehow salvageable.

However, the mixing is something I'm quite insecure about. I am aware the mix is pretty crowded and I am not too certain if I should remove something. I'd like to hear your opinions on the mix. Anything you don't like? Anything you'd change? Anything feeling out of place?

Thank you in advance.

Kick is a tad bit too loud in the intro, gives me a vibe like I'm roaming the city at night in my car.

Gotta rework the intro as it's too abrupt in my opinion. You can definitely lower the kick drum and I'm not feeling the long release on the lead with the slow LFO modulation. Not sure if that is the correct way to describe it but it's the focal point during the breakdown at around 2:10 mark. I think that is holding the overall track back. It's sounds really good when it's all together after that breakdown—I agree it's a track worth not giving up on.

Thanks for the feedback!

Which kick did u think was too loud? In the intro or in the main parts? I think they're both a bit too loud.

You're welcome!  :) Yeah, I agree, both are too loud.

About to wrap this bitch up and leave it rot in the graveyard of broken dreams.

Heres the latest version

-lowered the kick volume
-changed the snare
-some tweaks
-slightly less reverb

Id appreciate your opinion on this. Im afraid I have become numb to this mix and I am not quite sure if somethings fucked up.

So yeah here is probably the finished version.

So, anyone have any thoughts on the mixdown in general? I applied a gentle limiter on the master + some eq so the master shouldn't fuck anything up too bad.

Yeah. I'd like to hear some other opinions on this before I call this one finished. Does everything sound right and if not what would you guys fix or change?

Thanks in advance.

If you're going for that 80s sound, I suggest you find some proper TR-707 snares and look into the infamous "gated verb"-technique. Right now I feel like the snare is not meshing well with the vibe you're going for.  ;)

Hey thanks man, I never thought about this.

I'll try this out but it might not work due to the nature of the project but this is something I'll definitely be using in the future. Good feedback +1
