Big Kicks
« on: January 15, 2016, 03:58:20 pm »
If something of this sort has already been posted I apologize, must have missed it. With that being said, could someone please explain how to make those huge kicks commonly used in big room tracks? Tony Junior is a prime example. Not that I'm trying to just do that style, but every once in a while I'll get an idea where it'd be nice to have a massive kick like that. He also has this particular synth sound he uses in most of his builds, it's pretty difficult to explain, I guess it's kind of a wobble, it speeds up as it builds more. If anyone could help me figure out how to do stuff like that, that would be appreciated as well.

Thanks

Kenny Troy

If you could post a reference track I'd be glad to take a look for you, but I'll just throw something out there anyways.

As for the thing that speeds up as it builds more, first thing that came to my mind was an Arp. I could be totally wrong here, but I know I've personally done this in one of my songs where I sped up an Arp: on Sylenth1 click the 'Arpeg' box and then from there you can modulate the Time and Gate of the arp

Time: How quickly the next note in sequence will hit

Gate: The gate time is sometimes given as a percentage: When it's set to 100 percent, each note in the arpeggio will last until the next note starts. When the gate time is less than 100 percent, there will be a gap between the notes

Be sure to check out the Velocity and Key features as well. Play around, there's a lot to learn! (PS take a masterclass to fully understand your synth. It's invaluable)

If you could provide specific examples of the kick and build synth I could be of a better help. Tony junior has a couple different kicks in his songs but overall to get a big room kick you need a big thump as the top of the kick and then a sin bass that slowly decays for the rest of the duration. There are a multitude of drums synths out there and it is possible to make kick drums on the soft synth you are probably using now.

Thanks for the reply guys, I guess I should have thought to post a reference track. This song is perfect, it actually has both of what I'm looking for. The first sound is around 1:18 and gets faster as it builds. The kick used in the drop is what I'm looking how to learn as well.
