Rough outline, Porter Robinson inspired
« on: January 06, 2016, 04:12:45 am »
Hey everyone!

This is a song i've been working on for the past few days. It's heavily inspired by the live edit of Fresh Static Snow. Any feedback would be super appreciated!

Also thanks to Mat Zo and everyone else who worked on this forum! it's already wonderful :)

I like this a lot.  Reminds me of less of Porter but more of Mat Zo.  It kinda got that cool funkiness that a lot of Mat Zo's song's have.  One suggestion i can give however is to add some more layers overall.  the song is very close but i think it just needs to be beefed up a little bit if you know what i mean.  very good track though

Thanks so much! I totally get what you mean with the layers/beefing up thing. This is actually the first time i tried laying out the whole structure of the song before like reallllly producing it. thanks again! gonna get to work on it  :)

i like the shakers, but they're kind of loud (or maybe its just my headphones), the drums are great overall tho. i think some kind of atmosphere in the very beginning would really add a lot, like some recordings of nature - freesound.org has a bunch of creative commons-licensed sounds if u need them.

super cool overall though, can't wait to hear the final song!! was there any particular trick you used on the FFS-y saw arps to get them sounding that crunchy?

thank youuu! i agree with the shakers/tambourines. i'll probably sidechain them to the kick a bit. oooh cool i'll definitely check out that website! well I made the patch in massive, it's super simple - saw wave, 8 unisono, slight adjustment to pitch cutoff(detune), and pan position(spread) - my processing chain is kinda embarrassingly long tho haha. but i'm bored so i'll type it out!(btw i'm in ableton and use stock plugs for almost everything)

ok, so
- grain delay, phaser, chorus, utility, reverb, compressor, saturator, reverb, EQ, EQ, EQ, TB Time Machine(only vst in the chain), ping pong delay, EQ, glue compressor, EQ, utility, compressor, compressor(sidechain).

Yeah it's probably way overboard and over-complicated but it worked! thanks again dude  :)

I like this a lot. I'm going for a similar style.

I don't have any critique of the existing content, it's quite good.

I would maybe add atmosphere to the intro (as eidolon mentioned) and in the latter part where you have the repeated chords (1:55-2:30ish) I think vocal chops or some kind of additional melodies would be really good. I'm always just adding more and more melodic content til I cant fit anymore, though, haha.

In regards to adding in atmosphere, if your using Ableton you can use the resonator audio effect to tune an atmospheric recording to a certain key that way it sits in your song better... but Im guessing your using fl studio.

thanks man! yeah I actually worked on the atmospheres all last night haha, and hmm maybe. I've been wanting to try out vocal chops so it could be cool

yep I use ableton! I could probably get some cool textures if I used the resonator on a reverb, then used the grain delay, and resampled it. thanks for the idea dude!

intro arp sequence sounds a little empty nearing 0:18. wouldn't hurt to let the ping pong delay spill over

nice synth flourishes at the end of every bar

the chords could be more in your face. ott, distortion, haas effect

your high percs can afford to be autopanned. it'd make it more interesting

samplephonics has pretty good tonal foley/atmospheres. especially Ambient Electronica/liquid soul packs. that'd really help.

the snare could be crunchier - try layering a french house snare and a stereo'd preclap so the kick and snare don't seem like they're all mono.

the stutter would be good with a pitch enveloped/ cutoff enveloped bass.

you could go a little heavier on overall distortion if you're trying the porter sound - CLA/saturn/trash

@frissont yoooo thanks for so many suggestions! I'll definitely take all of those into account. i especially agree with the auto panning on the percs that'd really help keep it interesting

So over the past 2 days I took what everybody said and did what I thought was best for the song. here's the updated version(which is most likely the finished version but Im going to give it at least a week)

let me know what you think!
