Remaking Madeon
« on: January 13, 2016, 07:00:49 pm »
Hey! What`s up?
Have you ever tried remaking the one and only Madeon? Because I have and it`s always such a pain, like sure, I can remake most of edm sounds but him?! And it really annoys me because he uses the same synths and stuff so it`s definitely possible! So, I ask you to share your attempts, here are some of mine:
- Some Zephyr sounds https://soundcloud.com/matt-viper/zephyr
- Home Arp https://soundcloud.com/matt-viper/home
- The City lead https://soundcloud.com/matt-viper/the-city-lead-remake-attempt There should be a pitch down at the end but I failed at it so whatever
- Imperium Bass, kinda? It was hard for me. https://soundcloud.com/matt-viper/imperium-bass-remake-attempt
I can`t to hear what you did :)
Cheers

Trying to remake Madeon stuff is like trying to cut your hair using only your fingers. It's a tough task.

Quite liked that Imperium bass though. I know some of the notes were off but the actual sound's not bad at all. Might have a go myself.

Other than the fact that all of the vowels in this are mostly wrong, here was my attempt on the Pay No Mind vox with a friend's copy of FM8 https://instaud.io/72T 90% of what you hear came from using the Talk Wah effect.

Formant filters and bitcrushing are your friends.

Try taking a saw wave, putting an EQ on it where you cut out the low end, bump up 300 and 1400 Hz and a small dip in between them, then play around with dry/wet value and the position of the peaks.

Have you guys got any idea about how to approach this sound?

Squares, right?
Glide or pitch automation?

It actually sounds like a really fast arpeggio, not portamento or pitch automation. Listen carefully for the attack. I think it's a regular square wave with some reverb. The audio on that video is kinda distorted because cell phone microphones + giant speakers outputting massive dBSPL = crunchy city, so it's really hard for me to make out the tones.

not sure if you meant the lead or the tiny background arps or the lead, but if you're wondering about the lead it's absolutely square-based and it very noisy too. It seems like it has an envelope on the volume decaying it after a bit. It also appears to be a bit detuned w/ reverb on it.
As for the arps, they sound like maybe 1/32nd note squares with a bit of amp env release or reverb on them. Actually pretty similar to the lead but they sustain more, seem less noisy, and not so detuned.
