Eastern saxophone trap - WIP
« on: January 13, 2016, 08:11:37 am »
This track is mostly finished. I just have to track more saxophone and clean it up a little.  Maybe take a solo or something.

What do you think of it so far? I just gave it a quick master to put it up for feedback.

I really enjoy the Sax, Even though the kicks seem a bit high tuned it went well with it. The string instrument pluck seems to hit really hard, almost in a metallic way. I wouldn't let it take up most of the lead, maybe layer it with something a little more softer? I can't tell you much, you seem to be heading in the right direction.

Really great idea! id like to hear a punchier snare in there and a harder hitting kick. The stringed lead sticks out pretty sharply to me also, it just seems like it decays to quickly so maybe a reverb or delay to give it some more ambience. Cant wait to see what the final mix sounds like!

Are you looking for advice in a specific area? Since you said this was mostly done, I am assuming you aren't changing much of the track...

Right off the bat, i have two arrangement suggestions - the intro could be a little gentler, no need to rush things, especially when using two or three melodic phrases at once. Also the outro is a little abrupt, especially with all of the drama and big sounds used across the entire track.

While the plucked instrument and sax play each other off well, they could use a little more contrast. Perhaps a little EQ ing to the string would make the sax come alive.

Mostly advice on the mixdown.  ;D  Thanks for all of the suggestions though! I'll keep working on this one and see how I can improve it a little more.

808s need more life, i would try to compress them, layer them with a punchier kick and side chain it, camel crusher on the sub, and then maybe an exciter on the sub as well....trap thrives with booming 808s

Is it the higher end of the 808s that need more you think? Just more character up there or more throughout? Or is the sub level good?

Nice use of ambience.  I definitely enjoyed the atmosphere and melodic content.  Great ideas here!

I feel your Sub "808 trap" bass can be beefed up.  It seems quiet in relation to the rest of the track and it doesn't have that signature trap "impact".  Also, I noticed your Kick tick that you layered above it is quite thin and doesn't offer much punch.  Here's a random trap song I found that has what I'm talking about: https://soundcloud.com/partythieves/party-thieves-lazy-boyz-rise

You could search for another kick with more "thump" to layer over alongside it.. or perhaps if you highpassed the current one, bring it back a bit for its body.

Good job!  It was a pleasure to listen to.
