Best (your favorite) Kick samples?
« on: January 13, 2016, 02:45:20 am »
Hey, guys.

I know Kicks are one of the most over discussed topics, but it is after all the foundation of most tracks.
Curious where you get your kicks and what some of your favorite drum and percussion sample packs are.
I'm looking into getting the Dave Parkinson Trance Essential sample pack (link if you want to check it)

http://www.freshlysqueezedsamples.com/dave-parkinson-trance-essentials.html

I love the quality of kicks I hear in tracks by guys like MarLo, Mark Sixma, Orjan Nilsen, Gareth Emery,Markus Schulz

Some great quality, tight but big kick drums.

I know it all starts with a great sample but also how you use it in the mix and procress/EQ.

Also interested about other percussion samples you guys love!

i mix kicks with eq volume control, sometimes compression. look for a clicky kick take the lows so you keep the clicky part then look for a boomy bassy kick the lows and mix them together to taste. some kicks are perfect the way they are though, though eqing some highs is always nice 8)
i am not that good though at mixing kicks ask someone else lol

paid packs:

sunny lax kick packs
black octopus monster kicks
zenhiser trance drums 1/2

free packs (and also awesome):
hyperbits sample pack
bastian salbart free kick pack

i really love collecting kick samples, i could go on for days. these are at the top off the top of my head, though

as far as processing goes for my kicks i keep it very minimal, generally finding the right kick + shaping the sample ADSR + balancing the kick & rest of the mix in volume with maybe a bit of EQ is all i do. otherwise, if i have to do more i can almost always find a better kick to work into the track in the first place.

honestly these days i mostly finish a track then go back and swap the kick out til i find one that fits just right with the bassline/groove and then adjust as necessary

For free stuff, the mhak sample packs (there are 500+ free kicks in there iirc) are really nice—at least some of them ;)

sunny lax kick packs

Yup!

And I've heard good things about this one: http://waproduction-samples.com/index.php?route=product/product&product_id=166, although I haven't tried it yet. But to be honest, I haven't checked out new bass drums in a while; between a best-of short list I painstakingly distilled from my collection and the fun I've had with the Nicky Romero KICK plugin, I just haven't needed anything else.

Though the kit might be overused, I've found the lex luger samples sit so well it my mix and need hardly any tweaking. Pretty much just a bit of EQ and saturation.

Madeon kick is my favourite (Snares too!). I love how it`s fast decaying and hard hitting. I usually get it done by combining a few kicks with these characteristics. And a brushy hi-hat on top is a must! I love linndrum and mixing in a bit of an acoustic kick.

Drums from steve miller band, black sabbath and rolling stones (muscle schoals studio)
Rock'n Me
War Pigs
Jumping Jack Flash

I know it's old stuff, but to me those drum sounds are just fantastic.

That being said, i think 808's layered with accoustic samples are a great way to get a kick sample.
Josh Huval: Honestly, the guys who are making good art are spending their time making it.

For trance and progressive house I like the Freshly Squeezed Samples ones. I have their "trance kick essentials" and the Sean Tyas pack and those work for 90% of my tracks.

Anyone have experience with both the Dave Parkinson pack AND the Sunny Lax pack (both from Freshly Squeezed Samples)?

Also, how would you all compare these two packs with the typical Vengeance pack?  Usefulness of sounds, clarity, value, etc.

lots of great packs out there. The new Jerome isma-ae sample pack has some pretty good kicks in It.
really all depends what genre you are making I guess. Remember that sampling peoples kicks doesn't necessarily mean you are going to achieve the same output. I mean yes you can sample nice kicks but they are powerful because of the mixdown around the kick.

I remember some of the Thomas penton packs had nice kicks in,

more often than not now I use 'KICK' from sonic academy.

its awesome - the fact you can easily adjust the tonality and the length of your kicks is a winner to me. Makes it super easy to tune your kicks and also adjust the lengths for your basslines to fit which is massively important! you can also add in the 'click' to the top end to help it cut through the mix. Cant stress enough how good that plugin is.

paid packs:

black octopus monster kicks

Thanks for compliments!  It's very rewarding to see Monster Kicks getting mentioned so much in favorite kick pack threads.  I'm working hard on Leviathan 2 at the moment which will feature many kicks of the same style so if you have any requests for certain types of kicks for that pack please let me know!

I'm curious man, how do you go about creating your sample packs?

It really depends on the pack, but usually once I have an idea in mind for a pack I start researching the sounds in tracks that I like to get a feel for what is out there and what tracks have the coolest sounds (to me).  Then I use the many years of sound design techniques that I've learned over years and years from hired projects and try to develop some templates and techniques that I can use and re-use for specific sounds.  I have different techniques for each sound which range from pure synthesis to recorded foley manipulation (for example kicks are mostly synthesized in Harmor, and the FX chain is extremely important).  I've been planning a course for a while to share some of my techniques and hope to do some free youtube tutorials as well once I have some free time (which could be never lol)
