My version: Original Version (jump to around 1:40): Hey guys,

I have been working vigorously on a remix for super8 & tab's "Soul's of Lovers" and I am having trouble getting my mix to sound as big and epic as theirs does. I am getting close but could use some advice on how to get closer.

Do I need to change up the EQ? Mess with time based effects? Use different sounds?

Really just looking for general feedback here. I recreated all the chords by listening through a few times. I've also added some of my own sounds.

Any feedback would be greatly appreciated!

ps. if anybody knows where I can get the acapella for the original I would be forever grateful.

There's not a whole lot going on in the really high end (where some producers use white noise etc.)

I think another part of it is stereo width. I don't know a lot about how to change this but maybe whatever delay/reverbs you're using aren't giving enough sense of space.

Unrelated but some of the notes are clashing also (at 0:09-0:10 and 0:24-0:25)

i think you did a pretty decent job so far, as i am not a great sound designer myself, i probably won´t say anything you have not figured out yourself, but it sounds like the original is a bit softer and wider... not sure how a reverb will fix things, but may be a start to get a little wider sound. it also sounds like they youse a bit more whitenoise than you are, but it might be a false accusation on my hand, as i did not listen to it on proper speakers...

Your version sounds thin from the mids in comparison to the original. Listen to the original version and notice how the synth doesn't variate in volume as much each time the kick hits? The volume of the synth stays somewhat static even though you can hear some sidechaining Yours on the other hand ducks down when the kick hits and doesn't seem like its sustaining. Try lowering the sidechain on your synth so there's less dynamic range between the two.

Notice how the bass in your version is much more audible than the original version? I feel like this has something to do with there not being enough low mids within that synth. If there were more low mids then it wouldn't sound like theres so much "distance" in between the bass and the synth" Try adding another layer to take care of those low mids or maybe boost the original with an EQ.

It also sounds like the original version has more highs. The way I would fix it is by putting an eq on the master and giving the highs a boost. Heres an over exaggeration of what I'm talking about. A lot of people are gonna tell you its wrong and not to do it but thats the way I do it. Maybe it is wrong but to me if it sounds good it sounds good.

Really good feedback thus far guys! Working on a new version as we speak. Headroom is always our worst enemy. It always seems impossible to fit as many frequencies inside the song as we'd like. It's all about perceived loudness sometimes. I can definitely tell now that I have listened back with a more objective perspective that it does need more low mids. It also definitely needs more stereo width.

What I am really having trouble understanding is how their side chain is set up. It seems to pump in an almost non linear fashion.
