Chorus/"Drop" sounding weak/odd on some of my tracks!?
« on: January 12, 2016, 02:46:24 am »
I've been making music for a while and there is one concept that I still can't seem to get right every time.

I can get my verses and build ups sounding super clean and nice, but many times they overshadow the chorus/drop of the track leaving an empty feeling in the song.
This happens a lot when trying to make more bass oriented sections and trying to take focus away from the chords. These sections end up sounding empty and lack
the fullness of the rest of the song. I cannot understand why this is happening. Any advice would be helpful.

Here are some examples of what I mean:

Example #1:

This song seems to loose some of its full mix sound at 1:10 and I'm not sure why. My only guess is that it switches from chords to a Bass element standing as the main element.

Example #2:

This one is less of a problem but the Chorus just sounds a little off mixing wise and I'm not sure what it is.
:)

Try automating your master or pre-master volume so that it's a couple db lower for all parts except the chorus. That's the quickest, easiest way to add "oomph" to your drop.
It's only over when you give up.

that !
+ try some tricks like removing all the powerful low freq from drums. so those only appears during drop
+ use crash on drop and riser
+ try to tell people that "hey in a few seconds there'll be a drop" using whatever's necessary

starting 2:57 there's a background tonal riser + white noise riser (halfway through) + vocal and beat doing that riser thing. yea you get the point

Don't ever automate the master volume fader, and don't ever touch it either.

The issue with your first track is that your bassline is overtaking the other instruments in the background. Your low and mid-lows are muddy, and they are overshadowing a lot of the mix.

Your second track's kick and bassline have a hard time distinguishing from themselves. Either increase the volume difference substantially, change the tone of the kick, or sidechain. I would also recommend more dynamic contrast with the sections--too much bass in the pre-chorus and chorus will make the chorus seem anti-climactic, for example.

I agree with this but if it doesnt work you can automate the master volume as well xD there's nothing wrong with this. Try to play with high pass filters, and also leave empty space before the drop, Porter does this a lot and it works pretty well

Agreed with the muddy low end of the mix, also it hits fine for the amount of tension you've built up. Dont underestimate the importance of a good buildup. Taking out some lows gradually over the course of the buildup is something I do a lot. also study this http://edmprod.com/tension/ , i hope you like reading. It's a bit long but absolutely worth it
