He's using low frequencies (the subs of the kick in the vid), he sends the kick to a bus and high cuts it right down to the subs pretty well, then uses this bus to sidechain the highs from my understanding, I don't know the whole theory behind it, but apparently it gives a bit of distortion.

not sure how to actually accomplish this in Ableton or any other DAW because Im not sure what he means by "link the bass to the high" but the idea is that the low frequencies act as a modulation on the highs. This could mean a volume or distortion or compression automation but I can't be sure because "link the bass to the high" is extremely vague. My best guess would be to buss the low end of your whole mix and the highs to one channel, then distort that channel, then filter out all the lows and mix that channel back into your mix. Not exactly sure if thats what he means but worth a shot!

In Ableton you'd probably just have to...
- Use a send with master routing disabled
- Cut all the highs on the send
- Route the bass to it
- Use the send as a compressor trigger

As he said, all this shit is much easier in FL
