Timebomb (Amsel Remix) | My proudest mixing/mastering ever
« on: January 11, 2016, 06:11:32 pm »

For years I struggled with mixing and mastering. Even if I thought I knew it all, I'd listen to a "finished" track a week later and figure out the mix was garbage. I never understood how people without formal training could mix so well, like they were born with some gift....

I still don't understand it either. The industry standard is my worst enemy. But this one project came out great (luck? Who's to say) and even as I listen months later I'm happy with how the mix turned out.

I've moved on to producing hip hop mostly, so this is probably one of my last house songs for a long time. Thought I'd share it, feel free to critique :)

I feel like the mix is clean however it's not special (don't mean to be harsh) I noticed you used some sort of vowel bass but its tucked away and so hidden it sounds rumbly to me and that's something I didnt enjoy. Your drums sound clean with the bassline however.

Like you, I have been transitioning into more hip hop stuff haha

Really like what you've got here! It is, however, lacking low end. I think you've got a tiny bit too much going on in the mids around 2k (I am borrowing some bose headphones atm rather than my standard studio headphones so....bias) but other than that, it sounds great.

The kick could be a bit punchier around 105hz (maybe just a subjective thing) but if you got that low end pumping harder, this would be ohhh so good. It is definitely lacking weight during the drop.

Love the melody and all of the musical elements

This is a cool track. I agree that it's a bit hot in the high-mids in places, especially the keyboard stabs. That 3K-7K hotness in the keyboards pushes the vox back in the mix when it does that.

Though I do think the low-end works. And it's just tighter than some productions with more bottom end. But that's a production choice.

I do think while your production and mixing choices and chops are up there, you could stand to have a good third-party mastering on this. I think this track could be made considerably better with the right mastering.

Note: Gear used to audition: Lavry DA11 DAC, Sennheiser HD800 and Audeze LCD-XC heaphones, Lipinski L-70 and APS Klasik monitors.

Thanks for the thoughts, I don't disagree with anyone. It's funny since I made this song I've learned so much more and can confirm that the low end was mixed incorrectly.

I'm curious/excited to visit the mixing + mastering sections of the forums, some day I'll just binge on tons of threads with a notepad.
