Beginner Looking for insight !
« on: January 11, 2016, 08:24:18 am »
What's up guys, i recently started learning the beginning stages of mixing down tracks. I've been having lots of trouble with being able to dictate if my compression is making the difference. Also i've been having trouble EQ'ing my kicks and layering them properly with the subs. Anyways i recently attempted to mix down this track i wrote, i'd appreciate any sort of insight, try and take it easy on me lol  ;)

Your mix is not muddy, by any means. Just a bit boring. I find with trap music mixing is a bit easier.

The low end is dominated by a single 808. Anything that isnt an 808, you highpass to about 200Hz or so, maybe more. However don't be too drastic with this.
I dont think you sidechained your 808 to your top kick. That is a biggie for me because it sounds like a big block of sine throughout and its rather tiring on the ears. I also like to make my top kick clicky by removing low end + compression + transient shaper. Those brass sounds could definitely use some more punch. They're not very in my face. So process more?

A general feedback I will say is:
Get your 808 popping.
Make your snare noticable.
Make your lead shine.

I think if you can focus on these 3 elements you can make a good song. This is my process (for trap). Curious to hear your thoughts and other people's.

I think TwoFiveFour has hit the nail on the head in the last 2 paragraphs.

Its a good concept, I hear exactly what you're going for but its not "popping". The thing that makes Trap EDM bang is that pumping 808 kick and snare.

YouTube is your friend lol. So many tutorials on there.

Also try layering the horns, 3 separate tracks one low mid (300-800hz), one mid (800-2500Khz), and one high mid(2500-6000Khz) all playing the same melody, this will reinforce the melody and fill up the frequency spectrum.

This is a really useful chart regarding instruments and frequencies - http://i.imgur.com/aCwvAgv.jpg

Hope that helps.

Peace

The bass on the drop doesn't match well :/ maybe try some progression or just another note. I like the breaks and the whole climate of your track !

Too repetetive, imo. For me, it just screams "another generic trap produser". Try to experiment by designing your own sounds (that doesn't mean they have to be absolutely from scratch. It can be as simple as merging two samples together. You never know what you might discover!). Best of luck c:

Ricardo - never thought about splitting up various brass sounds in various frequencies.
Nice tip!
