Native Instruments "Transient Master" is simple and satisfying for me.  I've actually used it in non-EDM applications too. I recorded some voice over in an apartment next to a busy street and TM worked wonders to reduce unwanted noise on the tails in a natural way.  Probably could be useful for rap or Deep House VO recording...$99 but there is a demo version. Or it's included in KOMPLETE which is a worthwhile instrument plugin rack to have anyway... Admittedly pricy. I went without until I started getting payed for my work.

Transient shapers are fantastic tools.  First, for getting sounds with sharp attacks that "punch', I HIGHLY suggest Supercharger by Native Instruments. I was fortunate enough to get it for free because over the holidays a year or two ago they gave it away as a gift when they introduced the plugin.  It can take a snare and make it so "attack-ey" that it will turn into just a *click* sound.

For free: http://bedroomproducersblog.com/2014/09/20/sleepy-time-dsp/

Go to the plugin "Transient"
It's a free plugin that does the job of the one mentioned in the post above^ I have never compared the two but I think this one works well.

+1 for NI Transient Master - it sounds great, and I love the simplicity of the UI.

Before I had Komplete I used Flux BitterSweet which is freeware, sounds fine, costs no money, will have no negative impact on your bank balance, and is freeware.
