I use the reaplugs suite alot. it is the vst suite that comes with reaper daw and it is free check it out in the link below. very light on resources and powerful too
http://www.reaper.fm/reaplugs/

Molot compressor by vladg is also very good especially of busses since it is resource intensive

Imagine my surprise when I found out "restraining order" did not mean she wanted me to tie her up.

I'm gonna throw in http://www.klanghelm.com/. This guy makes some great compressor and saturation plugins. He also has a few paid plugins, the most expensive costing 24 euros (which is about 26 usd).

Sicne you call yourself a noob and doesn't have much money, use the built in plugins in your daw.

If you have the feeling you master them, go check other stuff. Only then you will know what differences you are looking for.

i urge you all to try out DSP Nightshine http://www.discodsp.com/nightshine/ it offers a really great 80s style compression to all snares and kicks, like those really clicky/snappy attack transients, i literally use it on every single drum channel ever bc its so so so good at controlling transients - great for creating those justice/sebastiAn type ed banger snares!

If you`re just starting out any stock compressor and eq will do. For example, FL Studio has a really great EQ that visualizes everything in a nice way. And you know, Fruity Limiter is also a compressor!
If you`re into french drums then DSP Nightshine is a must and it`s free! For synths I love XFer OTT, you won`t really learn compression on it but it makes everything sound lush!
When you`ll want to try the best, paid options, Fabfilter Pro-Q 2 is the best equalizer imo, Fabfilter Pro-MB for multiband compression and C2 for single band compression.
Also, Oxford Dynamics. And Maximus is a great tool!
If you want to colorize your sounds using 'classic compressors', those by NI and Softube are great: VC76, VC2A and VC160
Cheers :)

huge fan of the tokyo dawn labs freeware EQs/compressor:

http://www.tokyodawn.net/tokyo-dawn-labs/

I second this. Really good plugins!

I agree, I love their stuff! Also check out this guy's stuff, it's free and I'm pretty sure he helps develop the Tokyo Dawn stuff https://vladgsound.wordpress.com/

Edit: I see that he was already linked earlier whoops. I'll leave him up for emphasis though

If you're using Live, then the stock Glue compressor is one of the best anyway.  If not, the Klanghelm freebies, DC1A and MJUCjr, are amazing for nothing, and while they aren't free, the 'pro' Klanghelm stuff is so cheap and so good that it's worth finding €20 or so for the DC8C or MJUC (edit - as someone has already said, oops).  The TDR EQ is one of the best full stop, paid or not.

Just stumbled across these guys today http://www.tb-software.com/TBProAudio/products.html
Im into the EQ purely for the 12 bands, but that compressor looks nice too! I'll be trying those out in a moment.
