What's the consensus on Reason?
« on: January 10, 2016, 07:48:18 pm »
Hey guys,

I've been producing in Reason for a few years now (not consistently, spent 4.5 years in engineering school >_>) and I never seem to hear much about Reason in the EDM world. I heard Kill the Noise used it for a time but it seems all the big time producers eventually move on to a different DAWs.

Reason's modularity is fun but it seems to lack what I'm looking for. For example, I wanted to replicate this bass sound from SeamlessR, but I do not have a wave shaper like he uses at 1:16:

I spent an hour making a wave shaper by combining two maelstroms but it was not as flexible as that plugin SeamlessR pulled up and used in an instant.

What do you think?

Ex-Reason user here. While I was a lot more of a beginner back in the day when I used Reason I just feel like it really limited me. Yeah at the end of the day it does the same thing as any other DAW but I strayed away from it as I couldnt use it efficiently. Too much restriction when compared to Ableton or FL. But at the end of the day if youre good with it thats all that matters

it has it's restriction, but the thing it does is the hard ware emulation. So you're getting completely different perspectives when it comes to recreating things.

In theory it's all wave forms, so you should get close. but with out certain parameters or specific wave samples or types, it's tough to even get close.

I Have ableton and reason and i prefer reason because it's a great for my work flow. Plus it'[s more intuitive because i come from a world of wires.

Reason is not as precise, and it's sampling capacity is so-so, but then i know i need to get close and can fix automation in reaper and or ableton.

It's definitely a secret weapon though.
