hold it tight 'lil' john | hat loop help [neuro/dnb]
« on: January 10, 2016, 08:29:25 am »
Hey guys, here's a neurofunk-ish track I'm working on. I feel like the hat loop just lacks the groove I hear in other dnb tracks. What ways can I make the hat rhythm stand out? Maybe I just need another percussive element to compliment it?

I have thick skin, I suck at producing, and I am passionate about getting better. Rip this subpar track to pieces for me. :]

Thank you.

Oi,

So, good track so far. Atmosphere is good, synths are fine and bass could be a bit more chopped but they're nice. Kick is a bit weak and snare could be tighter. I would recommend you this vid to make this perfect.

Also, the mix could use a bit more High Mid frequencies. (And High end, which are hard to make in a DnB tune)

Except that, it's good ;)

Here's the updated track. I tried to integrate Babsmas's suggestions. Thanks for the tutorial! I layered 4 snare sounds. ;)

Keep the critique coming. Thanks.

when the drop kicks you might want to try to have your hihats go double time, you might need to mess with their attack/decay to get it to sound right. Also the overall groove on your hihats is lacking it feels very on the grid to me. maybe try introducing a different hat to complement the one your already using or mess with trying to nudge things slightly off grid to get some swing. Also that pitch bending noise on the left side is alot over used you might want to mess around with bringing that in for moments at a time.

In terms of mixing the bass/wobble noise seems to be getting lost when everything kicks in, i would try eqing away certain elements of the song that share the same frequency range as the bass noise.

your sub is all there which is nice.

good luck :)

I listened to both takes. I think it you split the difference between the two on the drum EQ, especially the snare. Good suggestions from Babasmas, but I think you took the snare a little too fat. It's too hot. Tuck it in just a bit.
Good elements in the music.
