Obviously I know this cannot be done perfectly. But does anybody have a decent method for pulling the vocals out of a completely finished track? It sucks when you want to remix a song but cannot find an acapella for the lyrics anywhere 

Is there another method besides "phase invertion" ? 

If the vocals are panned down the middle, you can try cutting out the side signal and EQing. It'll still be really messy, but that's the best you can hope for without phase inversion.

I've been messing around using mid-side processing and turning down everything but the center, then subtracting some eq to remove as much of the instruments as possible, then i'll add another layer with all the original signal in there and invert the phase but I can't seem to get any sort of decent end result. Just figured somebody might have a decent formula that has worked for them

In all reality its pretty much impossible without artifacts.

If i were to find an instrumental, in order to use phase to remove the vocal would I just play the two on top of each other, invert the phase of the instrumental and record the result? simple as that?

Yes, but the instrumental and the original have to be the exact same quality
