How to organize samples?
« on: January 09, 2016, 08:01:51 pm »
There's not  much more to say tbh xD I just wanted to know how do you organize your sample packs; like if you separate certain samples that you know you're be using a lot or if you check every sound from your library and delete the ones you think are not useful etc, because right now I have a big amount of sample packs with a lot of stuff I haven't even heard yet lol

I have my original collection since 2009 aprox 68GB separated by musical genres independent of the company that have made, It's good sometimes you check your libraries, there's a lot of trash and cheesy samples in the middle.

Currently working on subfolders for the different sounds (i.e. tonal kicks/top kicks/punchy kicks), and organizing my foley and SFX folders.

Not pictured: acapellas folder (needs organizing), personal foley files and other field recordings, stems from remix comps and other places, and my slowly developing personal "sample pack".

As far as how to organize your samples, here's how I went: I made a whole bunch of folders and subfolders (similar to picture), and I opened two finder/explorer windows - one with all my purchased samples, one with my new organized folder system. I listened through and started dividing everything into its proper place. Took me like 3-4 hours, and it's really tedious, but it helps a lot. From there, you can start further subdividing the samples so you can just find them ASAP, deleting samples that seem to just clog up your library (i'd personally move them to a "Trash Bin" on an external hard drive just for archiving but it's all up to you), and eventually finding the sounds you really like and putting a duplicate into your own favorite samples folder.

The "sample packs" folder is mostly just drums and percussive sounds, since the "field recordings/sfx/etc" folder is where all the foley and everything else goes. This is a pretty general organization method--I don't really go into the packs and start separating stuff depending on how it sounds, since I like picking at random when I'm adding drums to a song. That's just my preference, though. Besides, Ableton lets user search for keywords in their sample folders, which is helpful for when I'm looking for something specific (e.g. "triangle," "tom," etc.)

My organization is shit. I just mostly depend on good file names, and then I use ableton's search feature and will search "kick", etc.
