Imagine my surprise when I found out "restraining order" did not mean she wanted me to tie her up.

I barely know any music theory at all, but what little but I do know came from classes I took in school and this website here: https://www.musictheory.net

I learned a lot from http://www.pianoclues.com and I'm also going to try http://www.hooktheory.com (I saw many people recommend it). Btw, that daveconservatoire.org looks interesting, will check it out, thanks!

1) Google "Music theory" + <"EDM", "beginner", "advanced", "circle of fifths", "songwriting", "writing leads", "writing hooks", "secondary dominants", "tritone", ... and so forth>
2) Read over one or four of the links you find there for new information.
3) Put your hands on your MIDI keyboard and figure out with your fingers how chords look. Better: actually play! This enables you to hear emotional feedback on how things "feel".
4) Repeat in a few days in search of something new. If you find a term you don't understand popping up repeatedly, add that to your list of things to learn more about. I had a lot of fun learning about 7ths this way. (http://music.tutsplus.com/articles/secondary-dominants-and-how-to-use-them--audio-2663 ! )

This is a great place to observe what other artists do that you aren't even trying. For instance, I used to change chords every bar. Turns out there's plenty of tracks that don't.

Always loved Varien's Music Theory tutorial, I learned it before, but he teaches the basics of Music Theory really well.

took 2 years of music theory in high school.

continuously sought ways to improve my knowledge and application. studied it in my free time. talked about it to people who were actually studying music as a career and in school (college and above).

the great part about having it as a hobby is you can draw on many resources with out actually having to be called out to do it when you don't want.

Talk to enough people, get lessons, do your own research and you will eventually understand how to communicate to a musician or articulate your ideas a little better.

there's plenty of information out on the internet, but talking to people helps internalize it. Mostly because you have that associated memory of who you speak to.
Josh Huval: Honestly, the guys who are making good art are spending their time making it.

for me, I learned the basics from classes and then learned most of what I know now from experimenting. if you happen to have good ears, i would advise that you listen closely to songs with chord progressions you like and then try to learn about it.

For those in the states, local community colleges usually offer pretty comprehensive music theory classes at verrrrry cheap rates. I took a couple over the course of a year and it definitely helped my understanding of music.
