Hazard Nova - The Journalist [rock, not EDM]
« on: January 09, 2016, 04:01:58 am »
Quick disclaimer/introduction, please read before listening:
  • I sing and play guitar and bass. I use Garageband to snythesize drums (see #3).
  • I am NOT a professional musician and am not trying to be; I have a day job that I love and am successful at.
  • I started learning music production a little over a year ago, but it's a very part-time hobby; I don't spend any money on it and don't plan to for a while.
  • I like talking and learning about music production (thus why I'm here) but I'm more likely to hire a producer/mixer to help me record than get seriously good at it myself within the next 5-10 years.
Below is "The Journalist", a song I think is one of the best to represent my musical style. I'm looking for feedback on the songwriting, the arrangement, the lyrics, stuff more in that vein. If it reminds you of a song you know and like, that's really cool too--let me know which one.

the arrangement and songwriting is great in this one. didn't find any sections to become too repetitive or anything, and the guitar and drums were definitely really interesting to listen to. very very nice work in that area, but the vocals didn't seem to fit well with the instruments, they stuck out a bit too much to me, which made the instrumental fall too far into the background at certain times.

this is great though, you did an excellent job with the songwriting  :D
yeah

Thanks!

In terms of the vocals not fitting in, was there a specific part of the song this applies to? Do you think it was more because of the "mix" or the performance, or really in the songwriting itself?

Made really well, the only thing bothering me is the mixing of the vocals, they just don't really sound like they're put in with the song, but over top the music. Obviously the vocalist has to be more present then the rest in rock a lot of the time, but the way they were mixed in just stand off from it rather than go in with it.

Thanks.

Yeah, someday I swear I'll have these songs properly mixed and recorded...but until then it's good to know what needs to be done.

Cool stuff. You might be better off with a different forum though. I don't know how much rock people listen to here. Personally, I'm not familiar enough with the genre to be able to give a helpful opinion on this.

Thanks. I'm hoping enough people eventually join TPF to where there's a critical mass of people who can talk rock. I have some reasons for joining this forum and not others though (not in order):
  • I, uh, know one of the founders and want to support his effort. Plus it's cool to "get in on the ground floor."
  • I figure people in the EDM genre will have a higher average level of music production knowledge, which is something I like learning.
  • I know basically nothing about EDM--it's literally the only genre of music I don't listen to, and I listen to EVERYTHING--so I'm deliberately expanding my world a bit.
  • People in rock forums, for whatever reason, are often assholes. I don't see a culture of assholeness starting here, also for whatever reason.
  • I like the barebones, down-to-business approach of this forum.

The part from 1:38 is really cool, nice harmony when the vocal goes up ! But I agree with my previous speakers that vocal is "above all" in the mix. And the guitar from 0:28 and 0:37 (rhytmic one note) - after first listening to, I had the impression that it will fall out of rhythm soon :p I'm curious how you and your team represents in something softer, kind of ballade. Yes ! Something like "Babe, I'm gonna leave you" from Led Zeppelin.

It's not about love or girls or anything, but below is one of my "softer" kinda songs. Most of these softer ones I wrote in my early 20s, nearly 10 years ago. Tell me what you think. (PS. I know the vocals are occasionally pitchy; I had to record them fast, in my car in the driveway while my daughter was napping! Never got around to rerecording. :P )
