layered synths make hiss noise
« on: January 08, 2016, 10:52:58 pm »
i have a bunch of layered synths and although i love the overall sound of it, there is so much hissing in it. by that i mean, excess noise coming from the 10-15kHz range. it's really annoying and was wondering if there is a good solution to remove the noise. thanks.

Don't have your supersaws play that high in the octave or detune them to make them less prominent. You could roll off a bit, but I think that would probably destroy your sound.

Edit* If you do roll off the top, you can replace with some white noise to replace the sound and still retain a lot of the notes and melody.

Roll it off at the high end, at least on a couple of the layers. The hiss would be from too much treble above 10khz.

Trail either cutting the highs off, or using a high shelf filter, and just bring them down until the cut is fairly noticeable, then move them slightly back up. You'd be surprised how often treble can be just as clogged up as the bass end can be!
Build it, and they will come.

Many patches and synth presets already have white noise oscillator turned on. If you are using many layers and have white noise turned on on more than one layer, it all adds up.
So I'd say go and check your synths and see if that might be the case here.

If it's not, you will have to do some EQuing - you probably do not need 10 - 15 khz range on every single layer you use.

This are the first things that came to mind, if it's not the white noise and you already EQued the sounds, let me know and I'll try to help further.
