How can I figure out what music I want to make?
« on: January 08, 2016, 09:46:27 pm »
I've always been interested in making music and I have been for a year or two now, although I am still basically just copying tracks, or at least aspects from tracks.

I want to start making music that I would actually listen to but I don't know what that is.

I like loads of different genres of music and I fiddle about in Hip Hop, trap, and into the "this genre has no name" territory but I still feel like I am just trying to copy patches and styles, even themes of music.

I'm definitely motivated and I mess about in my DAW for a couple hours every day but I feel like I should have my own sound by now.

I don't believe in 'one sound'. I think every artist at every point in their life has the capacity to switch sounds and do something new. But I can only recommend listening to all kinds of music, not just electronic, if you're trying to find a sound you enjoy making. You might end up sequencing baroque cantatas in Reason - who really knows?

Try mixing as many genres in a track as you can. Then you'll see what you actually want. I've made a 10min track that combines Dubstep, Drum&Bass, Midtempo, House and more. It sounded like shit but it worked. The overall ideas were cool. I've 4-5 tracks out of this one single track.

Although, you need to try everything to be able to know what you want.

You just pursue making the music you like. Whatever makes your head bob man. You have to make lots of tracks before you find your own style. Just keep trying to do what your favorite producer does.

I can tell you is that only you can know what type of music you want to make. If someone else tells you what to do, then it's not really something you want to make, but what someone else wants to make. Maybe we should start with your motivation. What is your reason for making music?

I produce because I enjoy creating elements and putting them together, and that combined with my love for electronic music, becomes music production. I create music that I think is good, but it depends on my mood and what I come in contact with during the day. Sometimes I just ask my friends what genre I should produce and then turn it into something I want. It's a way for me to limit myself so that I don't get lost, having some sort of direction is always helpful.

The music you listened to as a kid will influence your taste in music as an adult. If you go back to what you liked then, you'll find inspiration for what you wanna do now.

Beyond that, experiment!

Well here is an example of what I mean

I was experimenting with typical drum and bass drum patters and bpm's mixed with hip hop influences and some string instruments because I like them, but I have no idea where to take the track next. This isn't just a problem for this track though it happens with almost all my tracks.

Please excuse the lack of mixing as I am just working on composition atm

"Private", you can share by clicking the share buttons and it will give you a private link.

Although, here's a thing. Both genres here, Drum&Bass and Hip Hop, have differents drums pattern. Mixing them together could create some kind of rythm that won't really fit. (Drum&Bass is more like 4/4 and Hip Hop 2/4) Although, it does have some potential. Sounds more like Hip Hop than Drum&bass tho. Work on sound design if you can't make a good structure. Then when you have the sounds you want, take a track in a genre you like and try copying the structure. Try finishing this track and look back and think. Is that what i want ?

Do that with few genres and what you want will comes. Like "Oh, yeah, I liked that, what if I applied it to this genre, or this genre, etc..."

I know, I just remember hearing the same pattern in a drum and bass song I heard a few years ago and Zealots of Stockholm from Childish Gambino so I gave it a shot.

Either way I don't think i'm having trouble with genres so much I just don't know where to go next. I guess this should have gone in composition as I dunno where to take that next even though it's not really worth saving
