Ya there will be latency if it's a usb midi keyboard. Sending straight midi to an audio interface will help a lot, but you will still have some latency to deal with.

I've just always worked around it. I record midi and then adjust everything in the piano roll.

I'm not sure how you should cover the walls, but you can buy some cheap foam to start with and just start playing around until you feel like it sounds decent. If you want to go a bit pricier get some Acoustic Wall Panels or just build your own. Cover what you can but don't over do it. A bit of color can be good, just be aware of it. Carpet looks thick so that's already good. Get some Bass Traps for sure. Two in the corner behind you should do the trick. Buy these these for those monitor stands if you don't have them.

If you want to get technical, do some research here.
You can also measure you room with this, but you will need a measurement calibrated mic. Those get pricey.

Good luck!

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Quick trick to make your track louder.
« on: January 26, 2016, 02:08:37 pm »
This is basic compression, and not a trick at all. You wouldn't do this when sending in your stuff for a mastering, because it will squash the track and you will lose a bit of dynamic range. This step should be done during mastering, and should be the last part of the chain. Now this isn't to say that you shouldn't compress at all before mastering. Compression during the mixing stage is used for level equalization and "glueing" of track elements  (drums, bass, etc) using bus compression. Adding a compressor and a limiter on a master is the last step in production.

A better way of doing this is adding a multiband compressor and doing the same thing but with tweaks to each band. This will allow greater control and can result in a cleaner sounding mix.

IANA Mixing/Mastering engineer, so take anything I said with a grain of salt.

Added variety to the percussion, changed up the bassline, and removed the vocal: https://clyp.it/gzlszbqa

Two things I would note is that, how it is now, the Hi-Hats in the beginning are kinda hard to follow only because the open Hi-Hat seems kinda random at this part. I had no idea it was a DnB track until the break drums came in haha.

Also whatever your voice sample is saying is really hard to understand, unless that is the point you were going for!

I love this track though, it is so chill and ambient. This is quality liquid! (Couldn't comment about the bass just yet because I'm not listening through monitors, sorryyy)

That's a jazz riff I put together. I wanted the drop to come as a bit of a suprise when the drop kicked in. This way the intro has some character to it that sets  it apart from the rest of the track.
Ya I think the vocal just doesn't fit. I'll probably remove it. It's more of a palceholder anyway. I trying to find a speech sample that would fit better.

Yo,

What were you thinking of changing about the percussion? Beats are one of the things I'm pickiest about in a tune but I like this as it is.

That vocal sample doesn't quite sit right. The first few syllables sound in time but the last couple don't. I would try and find a way to use just the first part of it minus that last bit. Otherwise, everything that's in this at the minute is solid imo. It could maybe use some little atmospheric things or some subtle elements that contrast with the generally smooth sounds you've used. But I like it on the whole.

In the last 30 seconds that major chord comes in - is the tune going anywhere from there? If you used a chord progression using some combination of that major chord and the minor chord of the same key it could make a really good bridge to another drop.

Regarding  the percussion I'm just thinking  of adding fills and a bit more variation. Atm its very repetitive.

The last 30 seconds of the song? There's no chords there, just layered pads in the root note (A).

Check out U-he Protoverb: https://www.u-he.com/cms/179-protoverb

It's an "experimental reverb based on the idea of a "room simulator".

And its free. I love messing with it for drums and certain synths. Honestly, its the most unique reverb I've found so far.

I wanted to capture the word in a song, and this is what I come up with so far. Right now I just need to change up the percussion and add variation to the bass. Otherwise I'm almost out of ideas. You may notice that the first drop comes a bit early, same with the transition. That's on purpose.

Let me know what you think!!

I like what you got so far, but the mix/master definitely needs work. Your drums are very muddy. You snare is not very bright at all either, and sound too boomy. Snaretoms like that usually fit best in buildups. Also your hihats need work. Remember, DNB is all about shuffle, not just the amen kick/snare structure. Without it your drums feel flat. Layer your hats and make sure they are in 16ths. Try layering a break as well, it will really add a lot more meat to the percussion. Google  how to add a shuffle, which you can either do with hats or a soft snare. Of course experiment, but I think for DNB hats are one of the most important things in your percussion.

Dude I'm loving this already. Honestly there's nothing here that I don't like. Bass is on point, leads are superb, paddy saws are dope as hell.

My only suggestion would be to add more variation and micro edits. Especially in the arp. (Think more in the second drop).

By plug you mean the main bassline hook? And ya I haven't yet done any mixing but that will come later.

Dude holy shit you're 16?

You have some dope skills. I wish I was at this level, and I'm in my twenties haha!
Maybe I'm doing something wrong.

I think both pieces are working on to be great.

The Rameses B track needs a bit more mixing on the drums. Also you need to vary your hats a bit if youre gonna go the DNB route. Work on the shuffle and groove as well. They have a tendencies to lock up atm (add layers and and make edits to your percussion).

Everything else sounds solid.

Still needs a ton of work. I was thinking that since its such a warm track, throwing in vinyl fx would sound dope. It's a bit repetitive atm since I just wanted to get the arrangement down.

Any advice on the "drop" ? I think it sounds a bit too plain. Idk I'm not really a house producer lol.
