Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Advice on choosing some monitors
« on: February 18, 2016, 01:02:35 am »
So as far as choosing monitors I'm not to familiar on what I should be looking for, I'm looking something that has a good mids & lows, right now I'm working with a sound bar that has pretty good quality but, I feel like they're over exaggerated in sound & also really are meant for tv but, more importantly they're commercial listening speakers, as far as price range I'd pay $300 max for a single monitor since I'd be buying them apart so a total of like $600. I was referred to buy some Yamaha HS7 Monitors I liked them but, I'm looking at Behringer NEKKST K8 Audiophile Bi-Amped 8 Studio Monitors & not sure what to think, I'd like to have the flattest response but then again my hearing could be vey different so, I'm just trying to choose the best monitors for my money, I don't want to be cheap & regret the purchase for cheap monitors. If you have any other monitors, I appreciate the help & reference to know what I'm looking for, also thanks in advance!

Sound Design / Side-chaining Volume question
« on: February 16, 2016, 07:05:21 am »
So When I side-chain a pad to create a pumping like effect to make a Future Bass style pad, after I wanted to bridge the segment from hard hitting Future bass pad into a soft melodic segment/bar whatever you want to call if, I try to take away the side chain but then it just gets either way to loud or what to soft so I have to adjust the volume but by doing so it creates a huge disconnect with mixing the volume and it created a very loud pad because of the side-chain that was o "ON" so I was wondering if I'm doing something wrong, is there another way to do this side change pump effect? (By the way the pad is side chained to a kick so when the kick stops the side-chain stops then the problems surfaces) I use logic X btw if it matters. I know this is a very VERY basic question but yeah

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Producing through School or Bedroom?
« on: February 14, 2016, 08:33:55 pm »
How would you say you been more inspired to do this?

Do you think it'd be better if you'd gone to a university or are going to one?

Do you think you'd have or have the same opportunity to learn as much as the one in school or viceversa or maybe even more as a bedroom producer?

Which do you think is better?

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Circle Of Fifths
« on: February 13, 2016, 09:10:30 pm »
Okay so question
1.) Do you use the circle of fifths trick where you choose your key you want to be in, be it Minor or Major build chords off of that then use the trick where you got to your . fourth, fifth and build off of those? As for minors, refer from time to time to the circle (whatever key you're in) and look at the minors?

Question 2. Say I'm in the key of AM and my last chords root was E, can I go down to BM or Cb? Then also can go from AM to Em to G#/Ab (member my root key for the song is AM) is it unwise to stray to far from the Main Root key? I'll try to explain more if I'm confusing you guys. Thanks for the advice in advance.

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Chord & Structure of Future Bass
« on: February 10, 2016, 11:40:15 pm »
So as I'm attempting to make a Future Bass track, I was wondering if the Chords follow a certain structure, the kicks, high-hats as well are they in eight notes? 16th's? Are the chords in 7nth's? Are compound intervals chords to much? Is bpm in 155? I've seen some in 110 others in 130 bpm? Any advice would be appreciated.

Samples/Plugins/Software/Gear / Effectively using samples
« on: February 09, 2016, 04:43:47 pm »
When people use samples I hear amazing FX or a completely different sound when they use them. So my question is when people use samples do they just cut and rearrange, reverse the sound or add other plugins I'm not aware of in the process? I'm not very effective in using samples but, I'm practicing on trying to make them more interesting instead of just using an entire samples with no interesting twist what so ever. I usually attempt this by getting remix stems and working with those

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Struggling With Sound Design
« on: February 09, 2016, 01:31:43 am »
Okay, so I was wondering if I could get some pointers on how to be more efficient on sound design because whenever I come up with my melody & chords and move on to sound design, I can never get or settle for a sound I like. Is it because of lack experience? (been producing for about 2 years & a half years) is it my song writing? Is it me? My lack of experience? Lack of creativity? I can hear the sound I want in my head but can't come to produce the sound irl idk what it is. So I was wondering If can get advice, I want to create more future bass, D&B mixed with the dubstep style with the modern anjunabeats style sound.

So I listen to this track everyday & I'm just blown away by how beautifully the plucks sound, so blown away, that I feel like I they're tangible and I can touch them, I can literally create an image of what this sound might look like if it were real and tangible so I was wondering how would I go about on creating plucks like the ones after Zoe johnston she says "Keep on little dreamer" and then the chords like the ones after she says "Dream on little dreamer"

Mixing/Mastering / Eq'ing for better sound
« on: February 05, 2016, 10:15:36 pm »
Okay so I wan to start from square on all over again I want to forget what I learned & start over because I want to take my music more seriously & improve so I was wondering if I could get some advice on how to EQ I know with every sound I create requires it's own little personality but I feel like when I Eq I don't know what I'm doing so I was wondering if you can basically tech me how to EQ what to EQ or redirect me somewhere that would help thanks for help guys.

So the my question is if I should buy some monitors to have a clearer definition of the music I'm composing/producing or wait a bit longer and work on my cheap 20 buck monitors for desktop which isn't good at all....I ask this because I feel like I need a better understanding of sound and how it work before I got out and spend said money on monitors or am I wrong? I have a sounder that I believe is 80w the sub on it is not bad the speaker it's self is good but I feel like I'd get a different animal with actual monitors. I'm not a beginner in music but neither am I an ammeter since I haven't made something I'm proud of yet I'd say I'm 2 steps above beginner and one below average, I guess I'm "below Average" still learning tho but any advice? If I should get monitors what kind should I get? I want the best bang for my buck I'd say the most I'd spend for one is like 160 so a total of $370 I don't want cheap monitors that don't provide the sound quality that I want, I'd rather spend an extra 70 bucks than spend $80 on cheap none reliable ones I mean if there good than, I'd consider them but yeah Do you think it will also step my game up as far as sound quality goes if I do get  monitors as well?

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / Basic question on BPM
« on: January 28, 2016, 09:17:46 pm »
So I'm going back to square one in terms of understanding music so I can producer better music but in BPM for example if with 60bpm there has to be 1 beat every second and with 120 bpm there has to be 2 beats every second does that mean there has to be 240 beats in that one minute (for the 120bpm)? Or is bpm just a device to govern tempo of the entire track and really shoulden't force you to hit a certain kick or notes at a certain pace or amount of times within the span of that one minute? Can bpm also relate to notes of chords or is it specifically for percussive's? Does it mean I have to have a certain amount of note percussive or both sounds within that one minute? Also would it matter when I have "the beat" hit? like instead of every 1/4 can i have ever 2/4 or 3/4 to fulfill the bpm? please correct me if i'm wrong or help me understand temp better thanks. Also I think my math is wrong lol but whatever I've never been fluent in numbers

Would you say you've improved? When did you start? Are you at the pint you want to be? Do you think you'll improve in time? Do you see yourself as wine getting better and better after years? I've been making creating music for about 2 years I don't call myself a producer yet because I feel I haven't earned that right because I hardly finish tracks cause I get bored with them or I get stuck I just feel like it has to be good or it won't get put out so I just buried them If I don't have fun with them anymore.

My first year of producing was when I was 17 which I hardly call producing was when I would get mdi files from garage band and stick them in and just think I was making music get audio files didn't care about keys or sound and the arrangement look like a huge long dragons tail with no layers lol along with I was learning how to use a new program I got like Logic 9 then moves to logic  X Then my second year was all about knowing how to properly construct a track still not very good then how to design sound still not good but I'd say my arrangement now has gotten better and better looking more organized I now layer also in the span of my second year I got a piano and now  year has passed since I got my piano I'm learning to play it better, I'm now am learning more in detail of how to build chords 2nd, 4th 5 major7 diminished dominant's etc, I'd ay I know where to go with my chords a bit better and how to progress them to a sound I like I haven't made chords that sound beautiful because I'm under the impression that chords have to end on beat tho I know that's completely wrong and this isn't the way it is in real life or how it should be I use pitch bend more now, velocity now I take a lot more into consideration  & experiment more now then actually produce tho I try to build tracks but still can't due to my lack of skills in sound design I'm stuck with maybe 4 VST's that I think are good tho I know all are good if you know how to use them I'd say I've improved in last 2 and half years my piano skills have gotten better and etc.

It's just sound design and how to progress a track and bridge it to a nice build then a main melody thats my problem also my chords want to resolve but I don't know how to resolve them so I'm trying to figure all of this out but I'm happy with the progress tho sometimes a lot of times actually it feels like I just started yesterday and I won't progress with my tracks or music in general so I give up and comeback tomorrow but this happens more than I'd like because when I here people like Mat Zo, Nero, Porter, Above & beyond, Kidswaste and people on Monstercat then go back to mine I feel completely demoralized and feel like crap so then I give up on my tracks anyways

How far have you come? Do you like your progress? what have or are your problems? are you still beginning? do you have some years on you and gotten to the point you want for now? do you believe in yourself to ever make beautiful music in time? What's your story? What do you want your story to be? I'd like to make it on Suicidesheep one day or monstercat and make a dream out of this into reality I dropped college for this what do you want to do with music? This is just a thread to let people know there are others like you such as myself that feel like garbage when they make music sometimes I hope to inspire and get inspires anyways yeah thanks also Don't ever give up on your dreams maybe all you need is time, patience, but you & I definitely need to put in work and read theory and fail learn to enjoy the process be it good or bad learn to fail and feel like shit, Don't give up. =D

Composition/Arrangement/Theory / How to construct a track
« on: January 28, 2016, 06:13:23 pm »
So I was hoping if someone could direct me on how a finished or work in progress tracks looks maybe in image or actual midi file so I can dissect & see how they approached it. I'm have trouble thinking theres a certain way to build one and arrange it because while I audio files of professional finished tracks I feel like i'd learn a lot more from the midi files itself in seeing what keys they/he/she used, like when did they made the chords come in? Or plucks? How high pitched up are they from the chords did they break the chords up & make a melody from the chords they used except took the melody from the chord itself and took it up an octave etc..I'd just like to know how they build the track any other advice would help a lot as well thanks
