I have this video playlist of my favorite producers making music, that I revisit when I need motivation.

Not bad. Did you record live drums and other instruments?

Drums are dope. I wish there was more bass and less high-end.

The question I have however is, do you bounce tracks to audio? It seems tedious and counter productive to the whole mixing on the go thing. Because you'd have to bounce as raw as possible and then redo things previously automate such as volume, panning and EQ's, which I had already done while working on the original project. I posted that question of bouncing on reddit, people seem divided. I get the principle when going from live recordings, but since I already mixed the half of it, redoing it from bounced audio sounds like a step back.

Some swear by it, as a way to work with a more organized template, while others say the only difference is that you really might end up fogging up the CPU if you don't have a decent PC to process all those VST's at once. What's your take?

No, I don't bounce my tracks before I do my final mixdown. I think that's a bit excessive. Occasionally, I bounce some tracks (freeze or flatten with Ableton) that are CPU hogs, and also bounce stuff to cut off reverb tails and such. But then again, I don't have 50+ tracks per project, so who knows!

Am I right to assume that EDM is kind of mixed on the GO for a good 75% of it by the end of the track?

I can't speak for others, but that's exactly how I do it. I mix as I go; every time I layer another sound, I'll roughly adjust the volume, panning, EQ, etc. By the time I'm done writing, things generally sound pretty decent. Then, I'll listen through the entire song and fine tune things.

Definitely sounds square-ish, but also has some distortion. Maybe try messing around with the distortion module in Sylenth1?

Haha, I didn't mean the plugin; I meant over-limiting which makes your waveform look like a sausage!

I like it. Drums are mixed very well.

I think your song is plenty loud already. I was listening to some commercial music before your song, and I had to turn the volume down because your song was actually louder! I would try raising the threshold on your limiter by a few dB to see if that restores some dynamic range. Also, make sure your compressor has sufficient attack (~30 ms) so you don't lose the transients of your drums. If all else fails, you can always go back to the mix and turn down your synths a bit. Or use more sidechain compression to create space for your kick.

I'm gonna have to agree with Mussar. I know dubstep is notorious for maximum sausage fatness but I think this song can benefit from having more dynamic range. Your drop will hit much harder if the rest of the song is quieter.

Very cool synths, but I think your kick and snare are getting buried. I would consider dialing back on your limiter/compressor.

Nice work, I really liked the trap switchup.  ;D

Have you considered switching to a trappier snare during that section?

Sound Design / Re: How to Isolate Vocals from a track???
« on: August 25, 2016, 09:15:04 pm »
If you have an official instrumental, you can invert the phase and sum it with the original mix to cancel out everything that is the same. Ideally, this should leave you with the vocals.

Well, if you aren't able to get the "drowned" effect you're looking for despite sending all of the element to your reverb, then I think you have no choice but to use an Insert.

First of all, great job for only 2 months. I'm pretty new to producing as well, so don't necessarily trust my advice, but I think I'm hearing some clipping/artifacts on your 808 sub kicks. Maybe too much compression?

Also, I think adding some hi-hats would sound nice.
