Sound Design / Re: Madeon - Innocence ft. Aquilo (Daydreamer Remix)

im very glad you enjoyed the remix!!  :)

you're half correct with your guess. i pretty much just introduced wider sounds during that section. the sounds that i used also had a bit more of a high end to them compared to the ones before. bringing those high frequencies can create a wide-sounding facade. meaning that its not necessarily wider than the sounds before, but it tricks the ears in a way to think that things are now wider and bigger. also reverse fx and volume/eq automation can create that smooth explosion kind of effect.

ah i was the one that did this exact remake!

i actually did that sound in the 3xosc vst which is unfortunately only in fl studio. there are 2 layers of 3xosc: one is a pluck-ish supersaw sound and the actual pluck sound itself

for the first layer, its a very simple supersaw with all of the oscillators set to saw obviously. the stereo phase randomness knob at the bottom of the vst is up 100%. the sound is made plucky by the cutoff section in the 'ins' tab of 3xosc. i used the 'lpx2' filter with the filter cutoff freq at 100% and the resonance around 25%. the attack is 36%, decay 46%, sustain 100%, and release 34%. the actual mod amount is 45%.

for the second layer, its the same exact thing as the first except the mod amount is 0%.

the supersaw layer is ever so slightly quieter than the pluck layer.

hopefully this was helpful! :)

Thanks for the response! :D
Yeah, I started on FL 11 and switched to Bitwig Studio a little while back. 3xoxc was never really something I used very much in FL, but I did noodle around quite a bit with Sytrus and Harmor.

A couple of questions for you about the parameters you were describing:

I understand conceptually the pluckey kind of sound that you can achieve with the ADSR of the filter cutoff...but when you say that sustain is "at 100%" are you saying that the sustain is all the way up? Or all the way down? If I'm understanding correctly, the sustain would need to be all the way down, or at least below the decay (46%) in order to have the plucky feel to it.

Likewise, when you say the the cutoff frequency is "at 100%"...I'm assuming that "100%" of the frequencies are being filtered? Because if I were to hear that the filter is "at 100%" I would assume that the filter is completely open.

Or maybe FL just does that part backwards. Does that make sense?

i meant sustain is all the way up. its made plucky by the modulation amount. fl studio is a little backwards in terms of these things, but hey theres nothing i can do about that.

and yes it means that 100% of the frequencies are being filtered.

Your parents aren't "old school", they're just wise and they know from experience that you're better off keeping maintaining a balanced perspective in life, getting a good education, having an active social life, and staying fit, both physically and mentally.

i don't agree at all. especially in his case. ive seen it in ninth parallel's (rishi's) case: with most indian families and indian culture, you have to fill in a certain role in society and if you don't you're an absolute failure. they will provide you with financial and physical health support, but mental and emotional health is NOT taken care of.

do you know who created this forum you're on? do you know who most successful/iconic electronic musicians are? they are EXACTLY what you just described. they are total nerds that were so passionate about their craft that they did nothing but bury their faces in electronics all day every day.

Inspiration/Creativity/Motivation / Re: Overcoming negative thoughts
« on: January 09, 2016, 06:10:39 am »
to be honest, those negative thoughts will always be there. i dont think there is ever a way to get rid of them.

HOWEVER, having those thoughts arent bad. it means youre dissatisfied with your work and you want more out of yourself. it means you know you capable of more. dont be afraid of those negative thoughts. you can let them drive you in a positive way. you are always growing as a person and an artist. so it makes sense why you would have negative thoughts like that. you get new information and you form new ideas so you end up being dissatisfied with your past work because it doesnt fill the ideas you have now.

so just keep working in the mean time and embrace those thoughts and let them push you forward to happier days.

I've seen this mentioned elsewhere on this forum, but an awesome free ePiano library is mda ePiano. I love it! :)

i agree on this. its easy, simple, and free. you can get some really nice warm sounds out of it.

definitely matt lange. his sound design and detailing is insane to me. some of the most interesting and stimulating tracks i think i've ever heard. his last album was phenomenal.

i do a mix of both! there are some really great finds in really obscure sample packs all over the internet. but also i like to pull out my phone sometimes and just record something i just heard somewhere that i really like and then edit it later. also you can create some really interesting rises and falls within any vst. reverbs and lfos are your friends when it comes to stuff like that. just experiment with anything and everything!

Anyone know how to make a Porter Robinson-esque Arp?

Ex:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q4BP_CQ2Azs

Drop is at the very beginning of the video, the shiny keys in the background that really add a lot, anyone know?

i assume you're talking about the 8bit-eqsue sound in the drop? if so, its most likely it was done in sylenth using the arp tool.
also instead of using a square for an arp like this like most people, porter tends to use saws for those kinds of arps instead as it gives the same effect as a square but isn't as sharp or overbearing as a square.

this is really incredible. love the piano freestyle thing near the end. and i really enjoy that snare more than anything. it hits in just the right spots. anyways, other than the obvious 'finish this song' i've got nothing. this is great!

woah dude this is really cool! i love the little fills here and there. great attention to detail. the drums are nice and crisp too. well done!

Mixing/Mastering / Re: Let's talk clipping
« on: January 06, 2016, 04:19:00 am »
i, personally, am a huge fan of clipping. to me, clipping is like another version of vinyl pops and clicks. it gives it that slight bit of imperfection and rawness that i really enjoy in a song. but of course, all things in moderation. i make sure not to go overboard with it.
