I use presets as a basis to begin sound design in most cases. Especially in instruments such as Serum & Omnisphere.  It's most likely best to give your own spin on the sound to make it unique to you, but I really see no problem with presets, given you don't choose one that sounds entirely abstract to the point where it's gross.
